barbara really didn't want to be here. nails, bitten right down to the quick, scrape against the glass holding her lemonade. a drink long nursed as the hours creep slowly onwards, every minute felt by a wearisome mind and tired eyes. attendees had long since abandoned any chance of small talk. good, she didn't want to listen to them drone on about the weather, or who's daughter had just become engaged to which duke, or if the new modiste would herself better than the current. every word fell on bored ears and glazed eyes. more than once she had failed to answer a question with the socially acceptable response, betraying her wandering mind. at least she was finally being left alone.
well, not for long.
she doesn't quite huff at his appearance, but eyes give a slight roll. ❝ did my father put you up to this? ❞ the new earl, surely embarrassed by his daughter's lack of interest and social decorum. tonight they would celebrate with decent society, tomorrow they would depart for scotland. leaving behind friends and loved ones, all so her father can tend to his late father's estate. ❝ i'd rather poke out my eyes with knitting needles. ❞ with bruce, at least, she doesn't have to mince her words or hide her distain. with bruce she feels more like herself. the girl before the chair. the one whose rather was only next to line to an earldom. that girl had a lot more freedom than barbara does now.
❝ please, save me the torment of the dance floor. let's merely trade pleasantries for the next ten minutes, and then you can go find another eligible miss, of which there are plenty here tonight, to lead in a quadrille. ❞
“that depends. are you done lying to me?”
❝ lying ? so says the man who makes his life one big convoluted secret. ❞
teeth bite down upon his tongue, forcing himself to not say anymore. getting in a verbal spat was nothing new for either of them, but it was only clark and tim's words in his mind that stopped him from saying something he'd probably regret. still, it was highly ironic that @crimenight was the one who was telling him that, considering, as for as conner was concerned, batman had more secrets and lies than all the rest of them. and the matter of his lie . . . he bristles at the thought, shoulders stiffening as his fingers bite into his palm.
❝ i'm not lying. cadmus . . . i have nothing to do with them. whatever you think or are assuming, it's not true. ❞

𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓, bruce wayne, is a neurotic control - freak who cared desperately about his self - image. she could tell all that from the way he wrote. overly flowery and careful. ( she supposed some would call it courteous ... though, she guessed someone of his status could afford it. ) and, the fact that he’s cycling newspapers like he's incapable of sitting with his own thoughts ... does nothing to disprove her judgements.
driving a huge black limo to investigate the happenings of one of his distributors seemed … needlessly showboat - y, impractical, and if lois lane’s opinions happened to line up with your average bureaucrat … this was really funny. ( she had no horse in this race, anyhow. only cared for the publication. )
he speaks. despite whatever outward projection her career gave people the impression of … lois lane was deeply introverted. they’d already spoken about all she cared to know about. ( curiosity was an ebbing and flowing feeling. ) she could play along fine, schmooze who she needed to schmooze, be who she needed to be --- though, she was comfortable in their silence, taking the time to leisurely write in her notepad. ( phrasings, thoughts, impressions ... mixed pages only she could decipher. )
when he does, he happens to fall on her least favorite subject: herself. ( more specifically, her personal life. ) she already knew all about that ... and deciding what to divulge was a whole other can of worms. the quip that sat on her tongue: did you always want to be a billionaire, or did you just fall into it ?
“ it made the most sense, i guess … “ lois says non - comittally, eyes slowly tearing away from her lap to meet his gaze. hawk - eyed, even if she didn't mean it. “ my father was a general for the army … i grew up in a lot of different places. i liked learning about people, the culture ... " while not technically a lie, lois withholds presumably unsavory information: that she was born with the incapability to the satisfied by anything except the road she paves with both hands.
she eyes him up and down, as if gauging him again ... a predator looking for an attack point. and, she smiles. teeth meeting him in a rebuttal that was so playful, it was almost demeaning. " thinking of a career pivot, mr. wayne ? "

green eyes roll playfully, a smile dancing across her lips. beyond the window of the car the city streets of gotham whiz past in a blur of soft light and orange horizons. barbara sometimes thinks the city is prettiest at dusk, when the day starts to make way to the night in a dusting of pink, yellow, and orange. an almost peaceful quiet descending as the citizens make their way home, before those who dwell in the underworld make their way to the surface. the perfect time dinner time for masked vigilantes.
❝ stop pretending you didn't enjoy our trip to big belly burger. ❞ though the resulting headlines and social media trends were mostly enjoyed by barbara and the rest of his younger bats. ❝ i heard they named a new burger after you - the wayne whopper. delicious. ❞ words giveaway to laughter as gaze turns to @crimenight. she doesn't mention that she, tim, cass, and steph had already tried said burger. it was pretty good. ❝ fine, you can pick. but nothing too fancy, i'm not dressed for the occasion. ❞
