he’d been out with a few buddies from iraq just shootin’ the shit, rehashing old WAR stories. for some it may of been a triggering topic. not for him and his platoon, all sharing a similar - morbid sense of humor.

it was pretty late by the time he got back. not expecting her to wait up for him. though, it’s evident she tried, finding her crashed out on the sofa. amusement finds his mouth in the way lips curve upward at the beautiful woman before him, so placid and snug. careful not to wake her, strong arms gently lift and cradle the woman against his chest, carrying her into the bedroom where she can sleep comfortably, but not before sneaking another look, taking in the way those dark brows remain knit together even in deep slumber. he wonders what she’s dreaming about, hoping it’s something peaceful. though, given helena’s past - he’s not so sure.

[ drinks ] sender brings receiver a drink from a bar

his anniversary with june served as a painful reminder of what he’d lost. from the moment blue eyes opened, rick was tormented over what he wasn’t able to save, protect. that wasn’t going to stop him from spending the day doing everything she loved, though. cooking up june’s favorite breakfast, playing her favorite songs, walking the trail she loved with those weeping willow trees. everything leading up to bringing flowers to her grave. that’s when reality hit every goddamn time. she was really gone, and it was ALL his fault.

that night - he wound up in a bar, drowning in his sorrows the best way known to man - alcohol. baseball cap covers eyes, not in the mood to exchange small talk with anyone. that doesn’t seem to keep her away though. the stranger who approaches with a beer in hand. he shouldn’t find comfort in the presence of another woman, but regrettably does. maybe it’s the way she’s not pushing him to talk, or how she genuinely seems to give a shit. “damn, i look that miserable, huh?” releasing a halfhearted chuckle before accepting the bottle and raising it up towards her. “appreciate it.”

oh, you've got to be kidding. look at this freak of nature--something jay's always thought he was. from a mask with fox-like features from a literal cape, she looks like something straight out of a comic book. even so, she looks armed to the teeth--someone who could meet him in combat and potentially win.

jay regards her, gesturing at the man with a bloody hole in his head before them. sprawled out, twitching, a corpse minutes from now. "i should think it speaks for itself, actually. this man attacked me, and i was simply protecting myself. really the long and short of it." there is more to it than that, but why should he give her anything?

"if you want to know more, you're more than welcome to try to make it worth my while."

daphne leaned against the brick wall,  arms crossed as she watched him fiddle with the cigarette between his fingers.  the dim light from the streetlamps barely cut through the fog,  casting the alley in an eerie glow.  simon’s appearance — grunge,  scruffy,   &  somehow out of place in gotham — caught her attention as much as his obvious unease.  he wasn’t from here.  she could tell by the way he moved,  like he wasn’t sure whether to blend in or stand out.   &  in this city,  that kind of hesitation could get you into trouble.  she gave him a once-over,  noticing  the way his eyes darted around,  scanning the dark corners. he was running from something,  or maybe toward something.

❝yeah,  you might want to keep moving before someone decides to make you a permanent part of gotham’s scenery,❞ daphne said,  her voice low  &  tinged with a mix of amusement  &  warning.  she pushed herself off the wall,  stepping into his line of sight,   &  gave him a quick smirk.  ❝ you’re gonna need more than a cigarette  &  a flannel if you want to survive here.❞ her eyes flicked over to the far side of the alley,  where shadows shifted.  the city had a way of swallowing people whole,   &  from the look on simon’s face,  he was a prime target.  ❝don’t worry,  though.  i’m not your savior.  just offering some free advice.❞

A brow arches briefly, looking over at the other as he thinks for a moment on why that would be something she brought up. What was the purpose of it if not to stir up his own feelings that he was keeping under lock and key buried far beneath layers and walls built back up. "Funny, didn't know she was sentimental about the past." He half mumbles, shifting his position slightly to cross his arms over his chest. "Though I don't really know why she'd be doing that really." He lifts large shoulder up and then lets it fall in a shrug. The last thing he wanted to do was give himself some hope, to open himself up to a possibility that felt she herself had closed when they said goodbye.
