Criss Cross (1949)

He's one handsome asshole, that's what he is.
Why We Watch: Cris Cross (1949, directed by Robert Siodmak)
In this film noir gem there are numerous reasons we are mesmerized. Director Robert Siodmak’s grim, Germanic flourishes (you won’t believe the bleakness of the film’s final minutes), stylish cinematography by Franz Planer, Los Angeles locations, and Daniel Fuchs’ coldhearted script constitute not just a superb thriller, but an entire other realm.
Worth the price of admission, however, is a sterling musical “interlude” during which Lancaster feverishly observes Yvonne De Carlo dancing a hot rhumba to the pulsating rhythms of Esy Morales’ Latin combo (these guys find a groove and stay with it). The shots in this superb sequence convey the heated amour fou between the lead character (Burt Lancaster) and the object of his lust, and thus imbue a threatening, ritualistic mood to what should otherwise be a swinging night at the club. It’s a phenomenal music video, and nothing less. By the way, that handsome young devil who’s dancing with De Carlo? Never mind, you’ll recognize him instantly. But don’t look for his name in the credits.
