It's that time of year when I complain about Christopher Columbus.

Recently, the extreme right has adopted the term "heritage Americans" to describe "real" Americans. This term suggests only people who can trace their roots back to the Civil War (and in some cases the Revolutionary War) are truly the chosen people.

This, of course, ignores every American who immigranted more recently. Basically everyone in this graphic with the exception of white Protestant Christians.

Everyone else: go fuck yourself. You are not American enough.

(Although it would be really funny if Black people who can trace their ancestry to the founding years tried to hang out with Tucker Carlson and be like, "Yeah, we the same, man." Just to annoy him.)

Anyway, it got me thinking about my heritage (which is Irish and Italian) and how Italians were lynched in America for being Catholic. Not as many as Black people, but it happened. A specific lynching was the impetus for creating Columbus Day as a holiday. Italian-Americans wanted to prove they were good Americans who had been here since the beginning, so they wanted a day to celebrate Italian heritage...

Except the Knights of Columbus picked the WORST guy.

I think, in conclusion, we need to stop trying to prove to White Protestants that we are "American enough" and just be. They let my people (Irish and Italians) be white because it benefited them, but now it seems to be swining back in the other direction--at least if the desire for only "heritage Americans" is to believed. Whiteness is a construct. We need to stop chasing it.

Columbus Day is a failed experiment. Also, he was really, really bad and we shouldn't be celebrating him.
