Water rationing to affect 2.2 million residents

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28

About 2.2 million residents in the Klang Valley will be experiencing water supply disruptions following rotating water rationing from this Sunday until March 31 as the water in all dams in the state has reached critical levels.

National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Datuk Ismail Kasim said the second stage of scheduled water distribution in Selangor and the Klang Valley would involve 260 areas in six districts, namely Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor.

“This will affect 358,342 consumer accounts or about 2.2 million people from 431,617 households,” he said at a news conference to announce the second stage of the scheduled water distribution in Selangor and the Klang Valley, at the SPAN headquarters in Cyberjaya, near here today.

Present were Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) technical development executive director V. Subramaniam and Selangor State Economic Planning Unit’s Macro and Privatisation section deputy director Nor Azmie Diron, who represented the state government.

On Feb 24, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced that Selangor would be implementing water supply rationing on rotation statewide from tomorrow to enable the chanelling of water to areas experiencing water supply disruptions since Feb 7.
