“wait, alec? like gryffindor quidditch captain, chaser, my teammate alec?” he asks suddenly, head jerking up in surprise. that’s more unexpected. and mildly awkward. “when the fuck did you fall in love with him?” this has to be a very recent development, right? “not saying he isn’t beautiful, but slow down there, squirt. no dying on my watch.” malcolm sets his fork down and leans forward. “have you ever spoken more than one word to him before falling in love or is this is a ‘spotted you from afar and now i’m infatuated’ thing?”

avis threw her hands up in the air. malcolm has been like her big brother and one of her closest friends since her first year in the castle but sometimes he could be SO THICK. “malcolm. of course. who the fuck else? and how could you say that?” she huffed and crossed her arms tightly across her chest. she was not infatuated with alec. she loved him. probably. “infatuation is such a rude word, i am deeper than that!!! of course, i’ve never spoken to him but i’ve seen him at parties and, like, in the great hall and the common room before - i even saw him in the library once okay obviously we’re not complete strangers, who do you think i am?” she paused to angrily stuff a piece of toast into her mouth. “besides. did you SEE how he walked off the pitch last night? oh wow.” avis allowed herself a small moment to reminisce. alec lee, jumping off his broom. hair perfectly windswept, quaffle under his perfect arm, laughing with malcolm about something - oh wait, malcolm, shit. he was still sitting in front of her, wasn’t he? she cleared her throat quickly, “... anyways, i know nothing about him and since you’re friends with him probably i need to know things because i am definitely hooking up with him at the after-party for the gryffindor-slytherin match this weekend which we are definitely going to win by the way because i heard some girls in the bathroom today saying that slytherin’s chasers haven’t been practicing well this week. i mean i don’t know who said it exactly but it’s probably true, besides you guys are better anyways so i mean like, there’s that.” she finished and looked up at him, eyes expectant.

dungeons and dragons

being heralded out of his room the moment he opened his eyes was really... not something he appreciated. as interesting as the entire thing sounded, this was supposed to be a vacation. but he figures he would be doing nothing productive if given the option to not attend, so he keeps his mouth relatively shut while he and his roommates trek to unknown territory (everything on this island is pretty much unknown territory for them).

dane should be rewarded really, for not tuning out to that entire speech given to them about how dragons nesting habits... he thinks, saying that his hands itched to pull out his phone and check his notifications. he gives the dragons the real props though, because dragons are interesting. people are not. and when they’re given the go ahead, his feet automatically move him to find and circle around a nest that looks interesting enough. “do you guys think that... if we touched the eggs the dragon’s will send us blasting like team rocket,” he directs to his roommates over his shoulder, “because the guys were really vague about that part.”

castor stares at the board in front of him for a long time before he makes his next move. though, he’s not thinking about what he should do next in terms of the game—he already knows which piece he should move next in order to win. instead he’s debating the consequences if malcolm loses again. the ravenclaw student discreetly glances over to the gryffindor who refuses to let him walk away from the chess game until he’s won—three consecutive losses on the gryffindor’s part later and castor can safely say that both are slightly frustrated at this point.

if malcom loses, he thinks, then he’ll subject me to another round of wizarding chess. and usually, that wasn’t something that he minded. castor was a rather big fan of the game ever since his actual father introduced it to him—it wasn’t long before the young ravenclaw was beating the elder slytherin over and over and over again, earning himself the title of wizard chess champ, albeit only within their home. but at this rate, he was ready to flip the table over and walk away just because he wasn’t willing to sit through another round of malcolm going after all of his pawns first and ignoring all the other pieces on the board.

after one more minute of deliberation, he finally moves a piece. though rather than taking one of the other’s last pieces, he sets malcolm up to take an important one of his—castor could only pray that the other third year would take the bait though. “your move.” he offers quietly, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back to observe the other’s actions. all the while, he hoped that the game would end soon so that he could go back to his dorm and not think of chess strategies for the next couple of hours—or weeks.

“i’m in love with him.” the phrase burst out of avis’s mouth and she immediately put both hands to her forehead as though it caused her agonizing pain to say. the older boy sitting across from her rolled his eyes as he took another bite of his breakfast. avis was not impressed with his lack of reaction, her life was ending. “MALCOLM. this is serious! i am in love with alec lee. he is beautiful and there is nothing i can do about it! i will probably definitely die from this!!!” avis’s expression turned somber, and she dropped her hands to the table in front of her - nearly knocking over her pumpkin juice. she spoke softly, to the tempo of a slow funeral march. “i will never recover. i am in distress.”
