If someone had old Zack ten years ago that this was how his life was going to end up, he would have laughed in their face.
He'd had his whole life planned out ahead of time. Join the Marines. Marry Aerith. Live on base with a couple of kids and a cat, maybe. White picket fences and come home each evening to a home cooked meal and a happy family to greet him. Okay, maybe that last one was pushing it a little bit, since Aerith never could cook to save her life. But it was a general thing.
Things hadn't turned out that way, of course. Zack was sent home with a purple heart and an honorable discharge and fewer body parts than he had left with, and Aerith...
Well, that was old news, now. Zack was working his best to move forward from that. He had a daughter to raise on his own. He had a new house, in a new town, and he was going to get himself a job or something to get out of the house. Between his pension and social security check, and the wrongful death settlement he'd gotten after the accident, he wasn't really hurting for cash, but he did need to get out of the house. Spending all day every day with a three year old was grating on him.
Sure, Lily's grandmother lived nearby, and Zack's own parents were in the next city over, but he didn't want to ask them for a long term commitment like this. Which was why he'd looked through Craig's List to see if he could find a babysitter.
The first three had been...not so good. The fourth was a maybe, and the fifth definitely smelled like pot when she'd walked through the door. The sixth was due over in a couple of minutes.
“What do you think, kiddo?” Zack asked the dark haired girl as he plucked her off of the bookshelf she was adamant about climbing. (Zack's mother had told him quite a few times, “I had one like that.” Zack was, of course, an only child.) “You think this guy's gonna be worth our time?”
“No!” Lily shouted, wriggling in his arms.
“No? Oh well, if he isn't, we can keep looking,” Zack told her, setting her down. She immediately returned to the bookshelf.
