Cross River Governor Professor Ben Ayade Declares To Contest For President As He Meets Buhari To Endorse Him ............ Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade has declared his intentions to run for president in 2023, following a consultative visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday. Ayade who met with President Buhari behind closed doors said he got a commitment from the president to go ahead and run if he has the qualities, but he must consult widely with leaders of the party from the south-south region. The Cross River Governor who recently defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress said he would concentrate on power, security and economic challenges if he becomes the President. He, however, said he would not hesitate to align with any candidate of Buhari’s choice, so as to consolidate on the modest achievements of the APC. Reacting to the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan also declaring for the presidency from the same zone and how that would affect his ambition, Ayade said he would gladly support Jonathan if he is the anointed candidate of the party. Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, has appointed 19-year-old Louis Okon as his Personal Assistant on Technical (Data Management) Affairs, making him the youngest political appointee in Nigeria. Christian Ita, the governor’s special adviser on media and publicity, announced this in a statement on Monday. He said the appointees include chairmen, members of boards of agencies, and special assistants. One of the appointees include special assistant on groundnut oil factory. In January 2020, the governor approved the appointment of 90 aides, bringing the total number of his aides to at least 517. When Newsmen contacted the spokesman to provide more information on the new appointments, Ita said the governor made the decision to reduce social tension amid the coronavirus pandemic. He said Ayade only needs the service of five percent of the newly appointed aides, adding that other appointments were made as a means of job provision. Ita said the appointment of a special assistant on groundnut oil factory is as a result of the new factory being built in the state. “There’s nothing wrong with that given that we’re building a groundnut oil factory. Besides it is the duty of government to create jobs for its citizens,” he said. “The governor has said repeatedly that he only needs about 5 per cent of his appointees. We will get Ukpepi back safe - Police

The Cross River Command of the Nigeria Police has assured the public that efforts are on to rescue the abducted state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ben Ukpepi. The police said it has launched a manhunt for his abductors. Ukpepi was abducted last Tuesday at his residence in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state by unknown gunmen. The State Police Spokesperson, DSP Irene Ugbo, said that efforts were on to rescue the chairman unhurt. She said that the Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism Unit of the police was working tirelessly with a view to rescue Ukpepi. “Since we received the report of his kidnap, we have deployed our special unit on kidnapping to handle the matter and I can assure you that the NLC chairman will be released.” Dr Alfred Mboto, Permanent Secretary on Security, Governor’s office, Calabar, said the state government was working with security agencies to secure the release of Ukpepi from his abductors. Mboto gave the assurance that with the commitment of the state government in safe guarding lives and properties of residents, the NLC chairman would be rescued unhurt. Read the full article
