Is Sonic Racing: Crossworlds Is Canon?
So recently I've noticed there is confusion on whether or not Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is a canon game or not. A lot of this seems to stem from the fact that there is story real story to the game, and that there is dlc characters that aren't part of Sonic's world.
So let's get into answering this.
For starters, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is canon, well it is at least is being tried as canon heavily by Sonic Team/SEGA. This is because in all kinds of official media it is being treated as canon.
Our first example is TailsTube #13 - Pit Crew features Sonic, Tails, and Jet talking about the Dodonpa inviting everyone to participate in a new racing event like he did in Sonic Team Racing. This event being the Crossworld Grand Prix.
This is not noteworthy because Tailstube in particular has been used to clarify the canon, if not being it's main purpose alongside given additional lore details.
We see this with it clearing up what the deal is with Classic Sonic, it clearing up the two worlds thing, helping establish Team Sonic Racing as canon, it making it clear that Sonic The Fighters is canon, it helping further established Knuckles Chaotix as canon, and it even confirming Sonic Triple Trouble as canon among many other things.
So Sonic Crossworlds not only being included in it, but the Crossworld Grand Prix as well is very noteworthy.
Spinning off from Tailstube is the Crosstalks with each of them giving details an lore about each of the Sonic cast, while referring back to previous events.
For example, as established in a previous post, the Crossworld Grand Prix is the first time Sonic and Sage have seen each other since the events of Sonic Frontiers.
Now as for the dlc characters, the might not be canon with exception of Tangle and Whisper. However, if canon they were likely brought to the Dodonpa Kingdom via world/travel ring across the multiverse.
If you want further details on this see my post on how crossovers work with Sonic, as well as my post on the canonicity of the olympic games. Also, my post on Sonic Speed Sim being canon to understand how the world/travel rings are being used, and how that ties into the Sonic multiverse.
Or the fact in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - CrossTalk #8 | Silver & Blaze, Wave suggested using a world/travel ring to sneak on over to the Sol Dimension to snag the Sol Emeralds.
A small little detail before we go on. The crossworlds themselves are canonically recreations of those locations created by Dodonpa. I plan to make a post about this in the future.
Now separate from all this is something Takashi Iizuka said in an interview about Sonic Crossworlds, that has been used to suggest we shouldn't take it as canon.
In an IGN article called Sonic Team talks the road ahead for Sonic racing by Paulo Kawanishi we get the following line from Iizuka
“The development team thinks it's a lot of fun, and they thought it was a great way to kind of get all this play activity together. So instead of thinking of it as a hard canon of 'this is how the world is,’ we hope everyone just enjoys it more like a fun party experience with a story reason for why it's happening, but not necessarily the absolute truth of the characters,”.........
So what Iizuka said is basically moot, as similar to how Ian Flynn isn't the end all be all of Sonic lore. Or how dev interviews are Miyamoto aren't the end all be all of Mario lore. The likes of Takashi Iizuka isn't the end all be all of Sonic lore, and we shouldn't take everything he says as gospel.
Now established in say my Miyamoto post that doesn't mean we can't look to what Iizuka has to say about details the games don't really cover such as how old Sonic is in say Sonic Frontiers, or details backed up by the games such as why Sonic races in a car.
But when it comes to things Iizuka says that contradicts not only stuff established in the games, but also other official media telling us the game is canon. Especially in the case of Tailstube, we take the official media over Iizuka statements.
The only way for us to take what he said as useful for establishing whether or not Crossworlds is canon, is if there was no other media saying otherwise.
In the end of the day, it is clear Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is indeed intended to be canon.
