“13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” is a poem often running through my head, especially the fifth stanza:
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflection
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.
This recording is from a trip I took to Amsterdam in 2014. At the time I made it, the placement of this recording within the standard sequence of the concert – orchestra tunes, crowd applauds, first piece begins, etc, intermission, more tuning, etc – seemed important to me, and manifest within the recording itself. And now, that clarity feels obscured. The music leads me to believe that this isn’t the end of the concert, but is it an intermission or before the first chord was struck? Comparing this to my recordings of street musicians, I think you can tell that this is from a concert space, both from the acoustic clarity of the space, as well as from the relationship that the concertgoers want to enter into with sound. Even though what’s being performed is something other than the music on the program, voices slip into the fore only to recede into the background hum of expectation.
n.b. the image I chose to include is a study from an exhibit on Pixar’s creative process at the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York. If you have the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
