Thus the sisters all had their adventures at the surface. But as they got over their first excitement, they all came to the conclusion that the most comfortable place to be was their underwater palace after all. The little mermaid listened to their stories longingly. There was so much more she wanted to know about the world on the surface than her sisters were able to tell her.

On many nights she stood by the open window and looked up at the dark water above her and the fish passing by. She could see the moon and the stars, but through the water they looked so far away. Sometimes a dark shadow, like a cloud, passed before the moon, and the little mermaid wondered if it was just a whale, or perhaps a big ship with many people on board. Little would those travellers suspect, that a little mermaid was looking up at their ship’s keel with longing eyes.
