Looking back in sepia vision…

This is me looking back at the photos I've shot so far this month to see which ones would work cropped square and sepia toned. The aim being to convey a sense of nostalgia and also, an uneasy feeling of impending loss…

Back and forth

Looking both ways along a path and also, across a bridge. These shots were an exercise in giving a thirteen year old digital single lens reflex camera a long overdue run out to see if it was still working after some water ingress a few months ago. To say I'm glad it is still working, is an understatement:)

The weather was overcast with a chilly breeze. The calendar might well say it's April and therefore it's Spring but, it didn't feel like it. There was an uneasy, moody feel to this short walk which you can probably sense in these images.

Three bridges

Firstly, an unassuming, functional concrete bridge over a babbling brook. Then the concrete brutalist underside of the Keynsham bypass that carries the A4 around the town. Finally, a 19th century railway bridge that carries the GWR line between the cities of Bath and Bristol. All rendered in glorious black and white:)

Bridges revisited…

…with a LOMO effect applied:) One that enhances the grittiness I saw in each of these locations. It's the way I'm rolling at the moment…

The last of the bare branches

We're coming towards the middle of April. Spring is well under way, albeit there are days when we're 'gifted' with grey cloud and a chill in the breeze. Yesterday was such a day. These images are me shooting what will pretty much be my last bare branch shots until November. I was making the most of it, that's for sure! Thinking about the prevailing light and weather conditions when I was taking these images, I concluded that they were best rendered in black and white.

Deceptive…

This looks like a footpath through a nice, quiet part of the countryside. The reality is that to the right of the path across the ditch, there's an embankment leading up to the Keynsham Bypass - two lanes in each direction - that carries the A4 main road around the town. It's all about the framing when it comes to photography…that's something to think about, isn't it?

The grittier bits of a Sunday afternoon walk

This is probably a legacy of the decades I spent living in industrial / post-industrial Thurrock on the Essex side of the Thames estuary but, on my photographic wanderings I find that I'm drawn to the gritty and the grotty. When we first moved to Keynsham back in 2022, a town that has some lovely countryside around it, I was on a search for the grittier bits to feed my photographic inspiration. As you can see from these three images, I was not disappointed:)

A grey day on the Hams

The grey skies are definitely back with a degree of haze thrown into the mix. These were definitely not good conditions for shooting images in. This meant that the local tone mapping filter in Corel PaintShop Pro had to do some heavy lifting to put some life into this set of images. The mood can best be described as sullen in this eclectic set of images.
