“They really didn’t want the mask to come off.” Hill thumbed through the scans, and pulled out a film that she then handed over to Sam, face mostly expressionless but for the flat line of her pursed lips.

Sam accepted the film and held it up to the light, angling so both he and Steve could see it, squinting at the outline of the Winter Soldier’s skull, and the blips of unnatural white that showed up, God, in his brain, not to mention about half his teeth, plus the mask, with its thin protrusions—

“Those are pins,” Steve realized. He looked over at Hill. “The mask—it’s nailed to his face.”

Hill’s face was as unmoved as ever. “Like I said. They really didn’t want it coming off.”

Everything was quiet. Everything had to be quiet. It was the only way to survive.

Bucky was crouched behind the main cash counter of the Super Mart with Becca all but crushed against his side, one hand clamped over her mouth and his own lips pressed tightly closed, both of them breathing shallowly through their noses, Becca's eyes wide and terrified, tearing up around the edges.

Bucky's head came up high enough that, even crouching, he could see over the edge of the counter. Diagonally from where he and his sister were hiding was the Pharmacy-- and that was where Steve currently was, standing perfectly straight and still, hands full of medication and blue eyes pinned on the Death Angel that was easing it's way up the main aisle of the store.

This was supposed to have been a simple run. They needed supplies. Steve's inhaler had run out and it was only a matter of time before his asthma flared up again. Becca had insisted on coming with them, and Bucky had agreed because it was supposed to be easy, in-and-out, no big deal. If he'd known the situation would take such a downward turn he would have made his baby sister stay behind.

He would have made Steve stay behind, dammit.

Now he watched the love of his young life as he began to breathe heavily, his hands starting to tremble, the boxed inhalers shaking in his grip. He was about to have an asthma attack, Bucky could see it coming and there was nothing either of them could do about it.

Carefully releasing his hold on Becca, Bucky gestured for her to stay down. Becca brought her own hands up to cover her mouth, nodding mutely. Bucky slowly straightened up, until he could get the Death Angel in his own sights, watching it slowly make it's way up the canned goods aisle for a moment before turning his attention to Steve. Steve's eyes darted between the Death Angel and Bucky, his breath beginning to shudder in his chest.

Bucky waved one hand to catch his attention, then signed 'calm down, deep breaths.'

Since the Death Angels had appeared, Bucky had never been more grateful for Steve having taught him sign language when they were kids. Steve still wore his hearing aids now, though he didn't need to use them often-- not like when he was little. Still the knowledge of sign persisted, thankfully.

'Keep your hands still.'

Steve was just nodding, about to look down at his own hands, when the Death Angel let out a wheezing rattle of a sound, pausing in it's steps and tilting it's head to-and-fro, clearly listening. Steve froze, his breath still hard and his hands still shaky, the medication starting to knock together quietly--

Not quietly enough.

The Death Angel moved abruptly, launching itself forward toward the Pharmacy, leaving Steve to dive out of the way. The Death Angel collided with the counter, smashing through it easily while Steve scrambled away. The shelves of medication were knocked all over the place, the sound of falling bottles and clattering pills covering the sounds of his flight for the moment, but it wouldn't last for long.

Bucky vaulted the cash counter he was behind, dashing forward without a second thought, only one thing on his mind: get to Steve. Save Steve. You can't lose Steve.
