Daily Instrument — Crwth
The Crwth is a Welsh bowed stringed instrument popular. The Crwth also played in Medieval music from the 1600s and lost popularity by the 1700s. The instrument has a trapezoidal or rectangular soundbox, a flat bridge (meaning all notes are played at once), a fretless neck, 1 melody gut string and 5 drone gut strings. The Crwth originally was played by being plucked, but later played with a bow.

This story is an amazing look at what may have happened right after "Irresistible," starting with Mulder and Scully's drive back to their hotel and continuing into their time there. Both Mulder and Scully feel deep concern and trust even as they struggle to express any of it to each other. Really, it's amazing. Title: The Grief at the Center Author: crwth Summary: Mulder & Scully after their first run in with Pfaster. Muldercomfort & spooning! Length: 45k (~7,950 words) Classification: Vignette/Angst Rating: Not rated Spoilers: Irresistible Favorite line: God she's beautiful, is all he could think, beautiful like Rennes Cathedral, like Da Vinci's flying machines, or a van Gogh painting; beauty seasoned by time, sharpened by experience, tempered by grief, rife with possibilities. Read the story! (If you have trouble with the Gossamer link, change "krycek" to "fluky")
Here is the Estonian bowed version of the kannel (hiiu kannel) which is also called a talharpa (which is a bowed lyre). (I am very interested in the Welsth crwth and this instrument is so similar!) I know this is not a sexy HD-type video/performance, but it’s good playing and I picked it because I think (no expert...an enthusiastic amateur only!) that this is closer to how actual folk music with the instrument would have sounded at a dance or other party/shindig long ago.
It's been so interesting learning about the crwth. So because I don't have anyone to talk about it with I will put some facts here
The crwth has six strings, and two of them are not over the finger board and are for plucking
The fingerboard is flat and so the strings are played in a drone.
The surmounting yoke and sound is are carved from one piece of wood.
The crwth was mentioned in the Laws of Hywel Dda.
The crwth is also mentioned in the Trioedd Cerdd as one of the three main forms of string music.
BONUS:
It's sound really pretty.
So I've been looking to the Welsh Crwth, and damn is it interesting. What do you mean 2 strings are just There.
