Do you think mermaids are real?
That's what the librarian at St. Cecelia's Academy asked the girls in her book club yesterday when she was introducing me and my book Cry of the Sea to them. A couple girls shyly raised their hands. "Well," she told them, "if you read this book, it really seems possible that they are."
Normally I'd say she was being a little dramatic, but this 50+ year old woman actually seemed pretty convinced that if there were real mermaids, they would be like the ones in my book.
Then, because my main character, Juniper Sawfeather, is Indian American and there is a fair bit of her Chinook culture thrown into the story, she brought me a little book called "I Hear the Owl Call My Name". She asked if I had read it, because it was one of her favorites as a child and was all about the American Indians of the northwest. I said, I hadn't, and she gave it to me. "You must read it," she said.
