i rewatched the crypt of tears tonight. whenever i watch it i think of this review

Today (the third Sunday of June) is Father’s Day for a number of countries and regions. Some of the fathers and father figures featured in the three seasons and the movie rightly deserve our love and respect, but quite a few of them do not. A couple of them didn’t even know they were fathers. Can you name them all and identify why they are included in this collage?

Thinking about the tent scene in Crypt of Tears today and I just find it so bloody funny that Phryne has literally invited Jack out into the desert (I presume it was that way around). I mean, how did THAT go?!

Phryne: So, Jack, how about we take two tents and camp out in the desert.

Jack: Like we've been doing for the last few days?

Phryne: But we didn't have tents!

Jack: Phryne, I am still trying to get sand out of my pants.

Phryne: (mumbling) You won't need pants.

Jack: What?

Phryne: Nothing...Anyway, I've already bought the tents, we're going.

And then they're there and they've presumably sat, eating and drinking, under the stars. All romantic and shit. And Phryne has been dropping HEAVY hints and flirting up a storm but Jack stoically ignores her, says goodnight and goes off to his tent to read leaving Phryne frustrated as hell, desparately trying to come up with a plausible reason to get him into her tent. And then she has it, a tarantula!! She fakes spider fear, Protective-Jack initiated, bingo!

But then that whole conversation they have after Jack has 'killed' the tarantula. It's hysterical to me because Phryne KNOWS there is no tarantula. What does she THINK happened outside the tent? Does she realised Jack is lying? Does she now think there ARE tarantulas and he shot one for her? tbh I largely think she doesn't give a crap so long as she can keep Jack in that tent and SOMEHOW get through to him, and on with the phracking!

“If I have to listen to one more conversation about the history of the julbock, I’m going to take my golden pistol and shove it up his…” Phryne murmured darkly under her breath.

“Alright. No more champagne for you.” Jack swiftly removed the glass out of her hand with an elegant sweep of his elbow. “Why don’t we have a dance?” He offered, hoping to distract her.

“You don’t dance.”

“I dance with you.” He defended as he offered her his hand.

“You do at that.” She smiled and gave her hand to him. “You know Jack, most people find London society stifles them, I think it’s rather loosened you up.” She commented.

“Do you?” He asked as he spun her around. “You don’t think it’s the life of leisure spent wandering the streets of London by day and making love to a beautiful woman by night? No murderers or gangs, no bureaucratic red tape, no ex-wives.”

“Well, when you put it like that…” She smiled as she spun again and he pulled her close against him."

Watching Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears again tonight and damn I forgot how Jack and Phryne were both attractive af in it 😳😳😳

Why I love Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

It seems like Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries has become my piece of comfort media for this lockdown. I've been thinking about why this show is so comforting to me, and I've decided that it has to do with the way it deals with another catastrophic event, the first world war.

Even though the series happens about 10 years after the end of the war, the war has a kind of presence in it. It often comes up in cases. It's one of the forces that drove a lot of the characters to where they are in the series.

There are a lot of war veterans in cases. In some of them, you can see the full, horrible effect the war continues to have. Archie Woods, Freddy Ashmead and Eugene Fisher are all disfigured, ill or shell shocked. We see the impact the war had on Vic Freeman, who pretended to have died so he didn't have to return to his home, and the effect that had on his mother and brother. The war itself is in the past, but it's effects aren't.

But then you get Phryne. Phryne who was a nurse and who watched helplessly as countless men died of horrible injuries. Who lives her life to the absolute fullest and who is extremely good at what she does. Phryne who helps nearly everyone who crosses her path, who makes other people part of her little found family. Phryne who still has trauma, but who is able to do her job as detective so much better because of the hardships she's been through.

And you get Jack, who uses the hardness he gained in the war to stick to his principles, instead of being emotionaly hardened. Who does the right thing rather than what the law requires (see: S1 ep3). Who gained empathy for others rather than lost it.

And there are so many other characters who were in the war and who are now living their best lives? Mr Butler was in the AIF, now he's using his skills to protect Phryne and her little found family (he's a butler but he acts like a bodyguard to them sometimes). And Bert, who seems brash and angry, but who is actually kind and who gets absolutely outraged at injustice (like the terrible abortion laws).

And I just think that's so comforting? Especially in this time (March 2020). To watch a show that takes place a while after an event that seemed utterly catastrophic at the time, and to see that, despite the damage it did, it just made some people all the more good and kind? It's truly wonderful, and I love it.
