19th June 1767, death of the creature known as ‘La Bête du Gévaudan’ or the Beast of Gévaudan a wolf like creature who terrorized the area of Gévaudan in France between 1764 and 1767. The creature was reported as attacking and killing between 100 to 200 people, by tearing out their throats over a 56 by 50 mile area. Causing public hysteria that the creature was supernatural in origin, it was hunted by the French government, the army, and two professional wolf-hunters. The story created a peak in newspaper sales after it was sensationalized over the course of the killings. The creature was eventually killed on this day by a local hunter named Jean Chastel. Upon killing the creature the myth that Chastel used a blessed silver bullet of his own manufacture began to circulate. The story was reported in detail in ‘La Gazette de France’, one of the oldest French newspapers printed from 1631 – 1915. Art shown is a recreation of the newspaper.
