‘La Bête du Gévaudan’, 21st September 1765 Gun-Bearer, and Lieutenant of the Hunt under Louis XV of France François Antoine Marques Argents, announces that he has killed the wolf like creature known as the ‘La Bête du Gévaudan’, the Beast of Gévaudan. The creature was reported as attacking and killing between 100 to 200 people, by tearing out their throats over a 56 by 50 mile area around the area of Gévaudan in France, between 1764 and 1767. Although shooting a wolf which was described as ‘six feet long, slightly over three feet tall, and weighing a hundred and forty pounds’, the attacks continued until the 19th June 1767; where a local hunter named Jean Chastel shot and killed another large wolf said to be of the same pack as the one Argents had killed. Upon killing the creature the myth that Chastel used a blessed silver bullet of his own manufacture began to circulate, causing public hysteria that the creature was supernatural in origin. The story created a peak in newspaper sales after it was sensationalized over the course of the killings, reported in detail in ‘La Gazette de France’, one of the oldest French newspapers printed from 1631 – 1915. Shown is a reproduction of the report of the fabled creature in ‘La Gazette de France’. The art is for sale on the website, as well as other historically inspired cryptozoology.
