Portrait of the poet Vincent Voiture (1597-1648) as Saint Louis IX of France (1214-1270) by Philippe de Champaigne

Queen Marie Louise Gonzaga (1611-1667), known for her love of poetry, wished to bring Vincent Voiture, the most eminent French poet of the Précieuses style, to her court in Warsaw, but without success. Before her arrival in Poland, Voiture accompanied Marie Louise to the French borders as a marshal on behalf of the king. A magnificent portrait of the poet by Philippe de Champaigne is preserved in the Saint Louis Art Museum (oil on canvas, 68 x 56.9 cm, inv. 719:1961). Voiture was depicted as Saint Louis IX of France and he commissioned it as a gift for his daughter during her stay in the convent …

"Margaret of Rochefort" as Judith by Hans Kemmer or circle

The highly idealized portrait of a lady disguised as Judith in the art collections of the University of Liège (panel, 51.8 x 39.2 cm, inv. 38) is traditionally known to be a disguised portrait of the unspecified Margaret of Rochefort (Margarete von Rochefort als Judith). Dated 1526 and inscribed IVDIT, this painting, although considered a work by Cranach or his circle, is closer to works attributed to Hans Kemmer. The small horn on her necklace might even indicate that she was a member of the Radziwill family (Barbara Kolanka?). It comes from the collection of Baron Adrien Wittert (1823-1903), bequeathed in its entirety to the University of Liège.

Portrait of Marie Louise d'Orléans (1662-1689), Queen of Spain, as Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Italian painter (?), ca. 1680, Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (oil on canvas, 110 x 98 cm, inv. d'Avalos 136/3).

Stylistically very similar to the portrait of the niece of King Louis XIV of France (1638-1715) from the Spanish Royal Collection, painted around 1680 (Prado Museum in Madrid, inv. P002388). In the museum's archives, it is considered a portrait of Marie Mancini (1639-1715) attributed to the circle of Hyacinthe Rigaud or to the Italian painter Antonio David, executed around 1720-1725 (Maria Mancini ritratta come Santa Caterina d'Alessandria).

Ancient Roman statue of Emperor Claudius (10 BC - AD 54), depicted as Jupiter (Zeus), King of the Gods

The colossal statue of Claudius as Jupiter, wearing a wreath of oak leaves, was discovered in 1865 in Lanuvium (Civita Lavinia), now Lanuvio, and immediately presented to Pope Pius IX. It was created around 50 AD as probably one of the honorary statues installed in the local theater. It is on display in the "Round Room" (Sala Rotonda) of the Museo Pio Clementino (Vatican Museums, inv. 243).

The monarchs of Poland-Lithuania-Ruthenia (Sarmatia), where Latin culture was very strong, even predominant in many areas since the 15th century, drew inspiration from the Roman emperors in their artistic patronage.

Double portrait of a married couple as Saint Sebastian and Saint Barbara by Hans Wertinger, 1511, Private collection (oil and tempera on panel, 78.5 x 51.5 cm, Hampel Fine Art Auctions in Munich, December 3, 2020, lot 400).

From the collection of a German aristocrat. Monogrammed and dated "HS (in ligature) 1511" on the painted pillar at the centre left. Hans Wertinger (ca. 1465/70-1533), also known as Hans Schwab von Wertinger or Schwabmaler, was a German draughtsman, painter, and stained-glass artist of the late Gothic and Renaissance periods, active in Landshut. Between 1479 and 1502, the Duchess of Bavaria-Landshut was Hedwig Jagiellon (1457-1502), the eldest daughter of King Casimir IV.
