Funeral banner of Eustachy Kurcz

Eustachy Litwinowicz Kurcz (d. 1647) was castellan of Vitebsk from 1639 to 1647, in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now Belarus). In Syanno, near Vitebsk, he and his wife Raina (Regina), née Wołłowicz, founded a Franciscan monastery and church in 1609. Similarly, with his third wife, Zuzanna, née Tyszkiewicz, he founded a Franciscan monastery and church in Grodno in 1635. The banner, made in 1648, is part of the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums (oil and gold on damask and velvet, 160 x 120 cm, inv. 3N-327). The Latin inscription on the reverse confirms the identity of the donor depicted on the obverse (DOM / PIISSIMIS MANIBVS ILLVSTRISSIMI DOMINI / EVSTACHII LITWINOWICZ KVRCZ CASTELLANI / WITEBSCESIS: […] ANNO M. DC XL. VIII).

In the winter of 166–167 the Langobards raided across the Danube, after which the Iazyges attacked Dacia and the Marcomanni invaded as far as Aquileia in northern Italy. Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus scrambled to deal with these new threats, but had only succeeded in securing Italy by the time Verus died of the plague in 169. Woodcut depicting the "Sarmatian Jupiter" - King Sigismund I (1467-1548), by circle of Maciej Wirzbięta (1523-1605) after lost original painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder from around 1540, published in 1574 in Zwierziniec … by Mikołaj Rej (1505-1569), original woodcut created before 1562, National Library of Poland.

The poem below praises the king, referring to him as "our Jupiter", king of the gods, the chief deity of Roman state religion throughout the Republican and Imperial eras.

This engraving depicts a man holding a hat and addressing a woman, before a poem expressing the complaint of the personified Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which suffers most from the actions of its own citizens and private interests. Like many other engravings in this publication, it is earlier. The style of the woodcut and the costumes suggests that the original can be dated to the late 1520s and attributed to the circle of Hans Baldung (d. 1545). The artist dressed an archer in the costume of a Sarmatian nobleman in his woodcut depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian …
