Marketable to who? Cause I know many many people do not want to see any version of hook get an LI that isn't Emma. If it's the last season which I think is very likely there's no time to give him that. It would be tacked on, rushed and be absolutely hated by everyone because it's not cs and nobody wants it.
Networks don’t market to the fandom. They market with the general audience in mind. The GA likes ships, but they’re not super attached to them. They don’t always remember stuff that happened a few episodes ago, much less a few years ago (especially if it was a small, trivial detail that is now significant) so you have the “previously on” segment. Most people in the GA might watch each episode once when it airs/drops online. Nowadays you’ve got GA on Netflix who binge watch, and OUAT loves them. If OUAT gets an 8th season, it will be because of it’s streaming deal with Netflix.
The GA doesn’t follow spoilers. They might read a few articles here and there if it pops up on Facebook or something of the like, or people are talking about it. For example, my dad who isn’t in the fandom by any stretch of the imagination, came across a news story about JMo leaving in like... June/July. Over a month after it was announced.
The GA is a very different beast from fandom. I’m willing to bet that the people you have seen/heard talking about any version of Hook with anyone other than Emma being unacceptable are probably all in the fandom (to varying degrees). The GA liked CS, yes, and they will probably miss having them on their screens, but if this new version of Hook finds an LI, they probably won’t rebel. CS has gotten their happy ending, but you’ve got this unattached, attractive pirate who’s doing a redemption arc centered around his daughter, and his heart has been poisoned... idk this sounds like a swoon-fest romance novel hero to me. It’s got potential. And the audience will see that. And the writers/network/etc. might very well want to take advantage of that potential.
The fact that they have talked about the fact that “the Hook we know won’t get a new LI” makes me think he will. Now, they could have just been trying to hint at the Wish!Hook story, but if no version of Hook was getting a LI, they could have said “No, CS 5eva.”
As for rushed and tacked on... well, it’s OUAT. Rushed and tacked on is kind of how they do a lot of ships. Couples have TL kisses in the same episode they meet! Based off of spoilers and the cast we currently have, it looks like any LI will be at least a recurring. They’ll have at least half a season to build up a relationship. (Unless they’re going Golden Hook, in which case, that’s been 300 years in the making and would be the most amusing twist ever. For the record, I’m not saying they’re going to do that.) If they go with someone Wish!Hook met before Hyperion Heights, he could have had years and several back story episodes to build to romance.
Overall, there doesn’t seem to be solid evidence that they won’t give him an LI. I think that everyone should prepare their souls for that possibility.
taking walks towards the harbor while pops busied himself with dinner became their thing, harriet once stated with a grin, and away from the house which seemed to be filled to the brim with people, no matter which way you sliced it, emma seemed to come alive. of course she loved everyone back home with all her heart and soul, but sometimes she felt like it was kind of hard to breathe, with a baby wailing for attention and three teenagers and one pre-teen running around.
“henry said this town ‘s tiny but tae me ‘s kinda larger than life,” harriet said, startling emma from her thoughts. “ah guess tha’s wha’ happens when y’grow up ‘neath a dome. ‘s like...ah cannae quite remember th’ name o’ th’ thing but henry said tha’ th’ evil---ah mean, regina, used tae keep one in her office. ‘s a tiny thing wit’ a picture ‘neath a dome an’ when y’shake it, it fills itself up wit’ snow.”
“oh,” emma replied almost immediately. “you mean a snow globe?”
“aye,” said the dark haired girl. “ah do.”
concern flashed across emma’s face as she quietly pieced together what harriet told her just now, and the things she, harry and cj had blurted out before. “so you grew up, where, exactly? beneath a life sized snow globe?”
harriet chuckled but there was no mirth in her eyes. “ah s’pose y’could call it tha’. t’was a piece o’ th’ enchanted forest; no one spoke o’ it, it ain’t on no maps either. we all called it th’ isle o’ th’ lost; bunch o’ us were trapped there fer years wit’ no supplies, no clean water, no proper food. no magic, nowt’.”
“how’d you get there in the first place?” emma resolved to have a chat with mr. gold soon enough, because if there was one hidden corner of the enchanted forest, maybe there were more, and maybe she ought to do something about those hidden corners with hidden kids, the way she’d tried to do when she was in neverland to rescue henry.
“ah didnae. th’ isle was where ah was born,” harriet drawled and emma’s heart ached. “t’was all we had; tha’ tiny overcrowded isle, tha’ is, ‘til y’broke th’ curse, which was probably th’ dark one’s doin’, but ah dinnae ken tha’ fer sure.”
“i only broke the curse in storybrooke,” emma frowned and harriet shrugged: “ah dinnae how it works, exactly, but ah do ken tha’ th’ moment y’broke th’ curse in storybrooke, y’broke ours ‘s well, ah reckon, fer th’ dome broke down, allowin’ us all tae escape.”
from the look on harriet’s face, emma figured there was more to the story than she was telling her. though she didn’t have to wait long, because after a few deep breaths, harriet was ready to continue. “th’ caster o’ th’ curse installed a failsafe: th’ dead didnae stay dead on th’ isle.”
“what, seriously?!” emma cried, sinking down on the stone bench.
“aye, ‘s hard,” harriet mumbled as she sat down, turning her gaze towards the water. “first time ah discovered it was when me powder monkey, a scrawny kid tha’ idolized me ol’ man, tripped an’ fell into th’ water; we were teachin’ him how tae swim but th’ kid - fer he really was jus’ a kid - didnae have th’ knack fer it yet. so ah dove in after him. me crew had tae fish us both outta th’ water. ah vaguely remember th’ kid bein’ cold ‘s ice an’ then he woke up wit’ a big gasp, askin’ wha’ had happened, askin’ why we were so worried, sayin’ he only saw a split second o’ inky blackness before he woke up again. he thought it had been a brief nightmare.”
the blonde woman debated whether or not she should pull her stepdaughter into a hug.
“many o’ me crew members went through wha’ me powder monkey did afterwards. even ah remember th’ same flashes o’ coldness an’ inky black darkness,” harriet finally confessed. “ah kicked th’ bucket meself a couple o’ times tae.” and though she didn’t like to think about it, the chance was high that harry and cj had as well, during moments that harriet hadn’t been by their sides. “under different circumstances, migh’ ah add.”
emma finally understood where the nightmares came from, why harriet was so antsy all the time, why she insisted on checking up on her siblings as much as humanly possible and why she was the last one to go to bed each night.
“hey, ‘s okay,” she heard harriet say, a wet chuckle escaped the kid’s lips. “ah’m fine now.”
no, no she wasn’t; emma could see that she wasn’t, and her heart broke all over again. harriet’s eyes softened and this time - in a huge show of trust and, perhaps, solidarity - she was the one to pull emma into a hug. stray tears slid down her cheeks and emma felt harriet sob quietly.
“thank you for telling me,” emma cleared her throat after harriet let go of her. “that must’ve been hard. i’m so sorry you had to go through that.”
“thanks fer listenin’,” harriet responded, wiping away her own tears. “ah never told anyone aboot this.”
“that’s what i’m here for,” said emma as harriet nodded her head. her phone chimed. she got up and held out a hand to her stepdaughter. “c’mon, let’s go back. your dad’s done with dinner. or, at least, he’s supposed to be.”
“ah hope ‘s mackerel,” harriet said as she - seemingly without thinking about it - hooked her arm through emma’s as they made their way back home.
emma merely laughed. “we’ll see.”
“what was it like, growing up for you three?”
a flash of something that hope cannot place crosses cj’s face as she drops her fork, which clatters to the ground, harry’s eyes harden and hope has heard enough about walls to know that they’re being built up around their hearts in record speed.
harriet says nothing for a while, she merely bends and retrieves cj’s fork after dusting it off and places a hand on harry’s shoulder, squeezes softly, and reminds him - with her lilting accent - that they’re all okay now, that they’re all safe now, that they only need to push the ‘uma button’ or the ‘gil button’ or the buttons for freddie, anthony or ginny, and they’d come running. (most of them, anyway.)
“trust me, lass,” says harriet after a moment of silence. “y’deh wanna ken. yer gon’ get upset.” hope nods and harriet nods too as she sits down. harry sighs and cj continues to eat. no one says it but they’re all thinking it: another disaster avoided. for now.
when there is a brief lull in the festivities, killian whispers words into her ears that emma doesn’t want to hear, because she knows what it’s like. “harriet’s not here. i can’t find her anywhere.” briefly, the blonde thinks back to their conversation, to the way the kid’s eyes shone as they spoke about fighting and self defense and magic and dread fills emma’s veins when she realises that harriet must have thought that there wasn’t room for her anymore.
which is ridiculous, by all and any means, but emma knows, okay? she knows the blind panic and the fear that gets you to choke up. she turns to killian, says she’ll find her and then heads outside, with the excuse of ‘i need some air’.
she finds harriet at the docks because where else would a child of captain killian jones be?
“hey, kiddo,” emma sinks down next to her on the bench. “you okay?” her heart breaks at how small harriet looks right now, all curled up into herself.
“does it matter?” the words are muffled but emma hears them, still.
“it does to me.”
they’re silent for a while. emma doesn’t know where to begin and harriet doesn’t seem to be offering anything other than stone cold silence. at last, though, it’s emma who says, quietly: “you know we’d never replace you, right? we never could. you’re just as much a part of this family as hope will be, as henry is, as harry and cj are.”
“pretty words,” harriet slowly lifts her head. “but one day, lemme tell ye, yer all gon’ grow weary o’ me. migh’ ‘s well cut me losses now, don’t ah?”
“we could never,” emma responds, but she also know what it feels like to have incessant thoughts stuck on a loop; the other person could argue until they’re blue in the face but those things won’t just change. not until harriet sees that she’s got a place here for herself.
and that’s what emma resolves to do.
“c’mon, let’s take a walk,” says the blonde. “and then you can tell me what’s wrong. didn’t your dad tell you about my super power?”
a nod. he has, indeed. “if y’insist.”
“i do.”
