Their adventure in this episode allowed the two most important men in Emma’s life to get on the same page when it comes to Emma’s protection and their own relationship. Henry and Killian love Emma Swan and they are both willing to do whatever it takes to keep her heart good and alive. Henry now understands that Killian kept the shears because he loves her and wants to create options to save Emma should the worst happens. Killian recognizes that Henry is trying to do right by Emma and keep her wishes. Together, they drop the shears to the bottom of the ocean and both agree to work to prevent Emma’s visions from becoming reality.

Alas, when Emma sprinklesonce-dead-hook the potion on the grave of one Killian Jones, the bloodied, beaten-to-a-pulp pirate only appears as a flicker, the spell unsteady. Emma comes away from the harrowing encounter more resolved than ever to find her love ASAP

Unfortunately, it can't be that easy. When Emma pours it on his grave, Hook flashes in and out, and he looks awful. He's bruised and bloody, and he can't hear her before he disappears.

The twists in Emma's and Hook's paths carried the episode. Death is an amorphous concept in Once Upon a Time, but whatever ends up happening with Hook, his sacrifice had an impact. The scene between him and Emma was painful to watch; both O'Donoghue and Morrison brought so much emotion to Hook and Emma's goodbye.

Hook might not stay dead. He won't if Emma has anything to do with it. Regardless of his final status, his last moments in this episode were powerful. How awful for Emma to once again lose someone she loves. I'm weirdly proud of her for making the correct but intensely difficult decision of killing Hook. She thought it was the only way, and she didn't sacrifice everyone because of her love for him. Her act took real bravery.

There were lot of really strong, emotional moments in this episode. Every confrontation between Emma and Hook (particularly their “final” moment) packed an emotional wallop that Once hasn’t felt for several seasons. I’m not too surprised, because (lately, anyway) O’Donoghue and Jennifer Morrison have been doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Since the season called for it, those two in particular have risen to the occasion and did some of their (and the show’s) best work yet. All that to say, it’s not surprising that their scenes got me emotional. Powerful stuff.

Emma and Killian fought through so much to be together and were only allowed a few fleeting moments of happiness here and there before he died in her arms. It was completely unfair, and yet I couldn’t stop watching. Emma and Killian are perfect for one another. They are both heroes at heart.
