“Protecting children” from any information outside their parents’ direct control is not an effective way to “protect children” in a world where 68% of sexual abuse is committed by a family member, and over 90% by someone the child and family know. In fact, it gives perpetrators more power to isolate their victim from any information that could help them disclose and safe people they could disclose to. And that’s not new information, we have known the exclusively “stranger danger” approach to sexual abuse and exploitation isn’t based on facts for decades now. We know a lack of information doesn’t protect anyone, in fact ignorance is a perpetrator’s favorite trait. Conservatives know that too. Truly, they see children as property not people and think parents have a right to abuse their own children. They want to “protect” their ownership of their children, not protect this extremely vulnerable group of people from harm.
