Admiring and sketching Enrique Martinez Calaya’s powerful painting, “Summer” (2007), a part of “On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Pérez Art Museum in Miami” at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. I missed seeing Calaya’s paintings on view in Los Angeles, so I felt especially lucky to see them here. #accessibility: A photo of Ashley seated in a rollator with her golden retriever service dog, Rico, at her side, positioned in front of a large scale painting of A woman wearing a red dress in a grassy landscape with a jaguar wrapped around her shoulders. Pedro Reinaldo Alvarez  Pedro Reinaldo Alvarez Castelló (1967-2004) was a Cuban painter who rose to prominence during Cuba's Special Period. Alvarez was a native of Havana, Cuba. He studied art at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" from 1980-1985 and the Instituto Superior Pedagogico Enrique Jose Varona from 1986-1991. He was a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. He married a Cuban woman and had a child.
