My mental image of Cube-drafting is "a bunch of Planeswalkers get drunk, raid a storehouse of the Multiverse's best spells, and then have a bunch of harrowing one-on-one battles." But seriously though, I love the big, sweeping political ploys of EDH, but my heart will always belong to nimble utility-creatures. I love Cube's style of "carefully choose a loadout, then have some tense skirmishes that can hinge on a single turn"- normal Limited feels like this, but Cube's higher power makes it much more fun. I admire the spirit of big seven-mana enchantments that give no immediate value, but I'm not that great at creating them.

What I love about Cube-drafting is that it’s a great way to sidestep the biggest problem with EDH, “trying to balance power level and play style among a half-dozen players.”

With Cube, everyone can still play their favorite types of decks, but you can determine the toolbox to keep things on a level playing field- the best combo deck can be on par with the best aggro deck, and you won’t have as many arguments over what counts as brutally unfun or not. Worst-case scenario, you just hate-draft the brutally unfun cards in question.

And I love the feeling of curating a whole draft environment- setting up synergies, deciding the overall power level, finding a good mix of bonkers-good cards that can go anywhere and niche archetype cards.

I really recommend it to anyone who’s sick of power-level arguments or likes that feeling, and I can give tips/advice with further detail.

Cube Testing

I made a whole slew of changes to my Cube the other day, and I would love to get some data and feedback from some of y’all drafting it [or just looking over the visual spoiler.]

I’m mostly wondering about the viability of artifact decks and whether or not they’re too linear, the power level of Black’s removal, the power level of cheap creatures, and the viability of three-color decks and blue/green decks.

The bots’ pick order is skewed towards my personal favorites due to all the time I’ve spent goldfishing the drafts, but getting some data from other people would be wonderful.

So Shun really really wants to do a cube draft, which is fine, until he tells us how many cards we have to contribute for it. Like, oh my god, man, I don't think I can even NAME that many cards, let alone pick them out and make boosters with them! Can they all just be Grey Merchant? Can I contribute about 100 Grey Merchants? Can I just dump a bunch of stupid black cards on the table and be like "there. there's my contribution". I have not played this game long enough to have enough favorite cards to add to this draft. I've only ever seriously played mono-black.

(But seriously, it does sound fun, I just am going to have my hand held the entire time because I'm a fucking child when it comes to tasks that involve big numbers.)
