Do people ever call your tortoise a turtle? Cause I get that often or people say "there's really no difference!" And I'm like 🙃
Yes, of course. I use it as a teaching moment though!
A simple chart to help you know the difference:
Turtles - Live in water, can swim, leathery slick shell.
Tortoises - Live on land, can NOT swim and can NOT breathe in water, domed shell.
Terrapins - Can live on land or in water.
Turtle is used as a catch all term mainly, so they’re not *technically* wrong if they call it that. So in short, all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises!
It’s hard to tell the difference sometimes unless you have a trained eye, here is a link to an article that explains all the differences as well as similarities!

The guy smirks, leaning his head back, throat exposed, eyes never leaving Stiles’. The cigarette hanging from his lips sparks, smoke curling from between his lips. His stance is cocky, arrogant. Stiles doesn’t stand a chance.
“Can I borrow one?” The guy raises an eyebrow. Stiles grits his teeth. “Please.”
The corner of his mouth twists up. “Don’t strain yourself.” His fingers – broad, a scar wrapped around the middle one – reach for the pack in pocket. Stiles snatches it out of his hand as soon as he can.
“I’m fine.”
His answering laugh is dry, humorless. Stiles doesn’t get what’s funny and takes another drag of his cigarette. “We’re all fine here, aren’t we?”
