Well the good news is I told them I wasn’t interested, and they backed off with an apology. First time that’s happened in a while.

A little of both! He will cuddle into a nearby human if possible, and we try our best not to react because if we look at him after a thunder clap to see if he’s okay, he notices that something is weird and gets more upset, but if we act like we don’t hear it he looks back and forth between us then decides that it’s nothing to be alarmed about.
When it gets really loud, or when there are fireworks (or if we’re not home) we sometimes find him hiding in the bath tub. I’m not sure of the logic behind it, but maybe because it’s enclosed on five sides and he feels safer in there or something? I feel sad for him that he gets scared, but it’s also one of the cutest things:
