OBJECTIVE

Test different sweeteners with a cake recipe that I am really used to.

MATERIALS

Bought xilitol, eritritol and esteviol (in portuguese) from a local store. The rest of ingredients are the same as usual.

METHODS

I weighted the amount of each sweetener following the conversor internet told me to use:

Xilitol: same weight as sugar would be

Eritritol: 70% of the weight of sugar

Steviol: 2% of the weight of sugar ~\_(°.°)_/~

I prepared the same batch of cake without sugar or sweeteners. Then, I weighted it in 3 different bowls to mix each sweetener to each third of the batch. Poured the batches on cupcakes trails making sure to differentiate each one by color.

BLUE: xylitol

PINK: erythritol

GREEN: stevia

RESULTS

None of the cakes was fluffy.

Xylitol and erythritol were good.

Steviol wasn't sweet at all, to the point it has a salty taste.

CONCLUSION

Either it's a lie that steviol has 200x more sweet flavor than sugar or the local store sold me a diluted one.

No aftertaste on xylitol and erythritol recipes.

Probably sugar helps the cake to rise, it's acidic and may react along with baking powder. For future tests I'll try orange cake to test the acid hypothesis.

Thanks to the ongoing creativity at Soft Crunch Games, who are cooking up something special. Which is inching way onto Steam. A cozy cooking title about dumplings probably isn’t the first thing that screams must-play for Steam Deck and Linux players. But Foxy Dumplings might just surprise you. Beneath its adorable fox mascot and warm kitchen vibes is a heartfelt story about burnout, rebuilding your passion, and hitting the road with a food truck full of recipes from around the world. And honestly? That combination feels pretty special.

A cozy culinary adventure is opening its doors

Back in December 2025, Polish studio Soft Crunch quietly revealed Foxy Dumplings, a charming cooking-focused adventure that blends cozy storytelling with food culture from around the world. Now, after three months of development work, the team is ready to let players jump in. Starting March 12, sign-ups for the first public playtest go live on Steam. Anyone interested can apply, and the playtest will stay open for the entire testing period. No strict gameplay time limits either. Once you're in, you can relax and explore at your own pace. For players on Steam Deck, that’s also great news. While targeting full PC platform support right from the start.

What the first Foxy Dumplings playtest includes

The Linux playtest isn’t just a tiny demo. It’s more like the opening chapter of the full experience. Players will get access to the story introduction, the first region of the world, and several systems that define the title’s cozy rhythm. You’ll meet early NPCs, tackle a bunch of quests, and start learning how the core mechanics work. That includes cooking, obviously, but also greenhouse management and the early stages of building your traveling dumpling empire. One of the recipes available during testing? Polish dumplings, a nice nod to the studio’s roots. So yeah. Expect a lot of dough folding, ingredient experimenting, and cooking mini-games. And plenty of dumplings.

A story about burnout, passion, and finding joy again

The heart of Foxy Dumplings is its main character, Lisa. She’s a professional chef who hits a wall. Burnout. The kind that drains the joy out of something you once loved. Instead of quitting entirely, Lisa takes a different path. She grabs her family dumpling recipe, loads up a food truck, and sets out across the world. Her mission? Rediscover why she fell in love with cooking in the first place. Along the way, players explore different cultures, learn authentic dumpling recipes, and help communities through food. It's not just about cooking, it’s about connection. You’ll grow plants in your greenhouse, manage ingredients, craft new recipes, and balance the tricky life of running a small food business. That means managing finances, customer satisfaction, and still finding time to rest. Because burnout recovery is part of the story too.

Cooking, creativity, and a surprisingly deep feature set

Underneath the cozy vibe, Foxy Dumplings actually packs quite a lot to do. The full release promises 12 cultures and dumpling styles from around the world. Players can experiment with over 60 ingredients and toppings, mix recipes, and upgrade kitchen equipment to expand what they can cook. There are dozens of cooking mini-games, greenhouse farming with more than 40 plants, and plenty of customization options to decorate your food truck and attract customers. One of the more playful features is the in-game social network called Foxtagram. Players can take photos of their dishes and share them both inside and outside the game. Yes, your dumplings can become internet famous.

Playtest surprises and community plans

The developers also launched a new community Discord server alongside the Foxy Dumplings playtest announcement, giving early players a place to share feedback and ideas. And for Polish players, there’s a nice bonus. The entire playtest will be available with a full Polish translation, due to make it easier for the studio’s local community to jump in and help shape the release. Because that’s really the goal here. The team wants feedback. Real feedback. They’re hoping players help fine-tune the systems, pacing, and overall feel of the title before its full release.
