I Want A. Baby Dr Strange X Reader
Summary: Your baby fever is getting out of hand and you finally ask your husband if you can try for a baby.
**************************
You have been with your husband Dr Stephen Strange since he was a neurosurgeon. The best neurosurgeon in the country. After the accident that left Stephens hands unable to perform surgeries you had helped him look for ways his hands could be fixed. At first you wanted to do anything you could to help the man you loved but as he went through more money just for the surgeries not to work you started to get worried. Yes you worked yourself but you didn’t make anywhere near the amount of money Stephen made. You wanted him to be happy, you wanted him to have his hands back because that is what he wanted but soon you ran out of funds.
Your relationship started to suffer as a result. You did your best to be patient with him because you knew he lost a lot but you couldn’t keep pretending that his little outbursts weren’t hurting you. You had done everything you could for him and you reminded him of that. He realized how terrible he had been to you and apologized many times.
There was one more thing he could try. Going to Tibet to this place called Kamar Taj. It would use up the last of your money but at this point what did you have to lose. That little bit of money wouldn’t bring you anything. So you agreed and went with your then fiance, now husband to Kamar Taj. That’s where superhero Dr Strange was born.
Stephen has been practicing magic now for a couple years. You still had a job and worked 4 days a week, you lived in the New York Sanctum which is nice. It’s big and it has all the books and other things Stephen needed to excel at his magic but something seemed to be missing. You knew what it was but you were afraid to talk to Stephen about it. You had no idea what his thoughts on the subject were because it has never come up before. However the more you thought about it the more you realized you wanted a baby. A little version of yourself of Stephen. In an ideal world you would have a boy but you would love the child no matter what the gender was. You wanted someone to hold and teach, love and cherish other than your husband. He was often gone and you didn’t hold it against him but you wanted someone to be home when he couldn’t. Someone to love endlessly like you loved your husband. Having a baby with him is like being able to hold a piece of your love. The more you thought about it the more you craved it. Every time you saw a little family out on the streets of New York or a baby at the store you felt your heart swell. The final straw was when you saw a brother and sister due no older than 4 and 2 playing at the park on your way to work. You decided that day that you would talk to Stephen about trying for a baby.
It was a few days later and Stephen was studying in the Sanctums library. He had been in there since the early hours of the morning when he woke up. That was around 6am and he hadn't come out and it was now just after 1pm. You decided to make him a sandwich and a glass of coca-cola so he would at least eat while he finished his studying. Knocking on the door you let yourself in when there was no response. Stephen often got lost in his studies and could hardly hear anything. Walking over to him without a word you took the book off the desk and slid the tray with his food and drink in front of him.
“What’s all this darling?” He scrunched his face in confusion.
“That is food, you know one of the things you need to survive.” You smirked. He rolled his eyes but chuckled under his breath.
“Yes I can see that but isn’t it a bit early for lunch?”
“Baby, it’s past 1pm.” He looked at his watch in shock. Was it already that late?
“I didn’t even realize. Why don’t you sit with me and we can split this then I’ll be yours the rest of the day.” He suggested using his magic to slice the sandwich in half.
“I made that for you, you must be hungry by now.” You pulled a chair up to sit beside him.
“There’s enough, besides I don’t want to spoil my appetite for dinner.” He pushed the plate over so it was between the two of you. You smiled and you both shared his lunch. You two were just sitting and talking about stupid things, nothing really important. You decided now was just as good a time as any to talk to him about the baby situation.
“Stephen, I have something important I want to talk to you about.” You took his hand in yours and gave him a little more serious look than you had before.
“What is it darling?” He squeezed your hand reassuringly.
“I was thinking we should move forward in our relationship, take the next step you know?”
“Next step, darling, we're married. I don't think there are any other steps to be taken.” He chuckled, placing his hand on your cheek.
“There is one we could take…” You kissed his palm and held your hand over his.
“You’ve lost me.” He purred as you rubbed his beard.
“I was thinking about us trying to have a baby.” You grabbed both his hands and held them on the table. “Imagine it Stephen, a little version of you or me running around. Someone else to come home to at the end of the day, who will give you more motivation to come home safely. A little one who will love you unconditionally. Someone to call you daddy.” You smiled warmly at him.
“Well I come home to you and Wong and you already call me daddy.” He smirked.
“I mean it Stephen, don’t you want someone else to share your life with. A little piece of us to love and hold, teach and cuddle.”
“Darling.” He readjusted himself in his chair. “I never thought about children back when I was a surgeon and now that I’m a master of the mystic arts I really haven’t thought about it. I’m away from home a lot, in danger a lot. The things I do and the places I go are dangerous. This place is dangerous. All the old relics and magic in this building is no place for a baby. I just don’t think it’s a good idea.” He countered.
“I’m sure there are things we could do, changes we could make to accommodate.”
“Things are perfect the way they are darling. It’s dangerous to bring a child into this.”
“But Stephen can’t we just talk about it and see if we can come up with a solution?”
“There’s nothing to talk about, there’s no way we can in good conscience bring a child into this.” He insisted.
You didn’t say a word, you just got up from your seat and left the library. You heard Stephen call your name once but you didn’t turn around and he didn’t come after you so you decided it must not have been important. You laid in your bed for a very long time, you didn’t even make dinner that night Stephen and Wong had to order out. Stephen had told you he ordered you dinner but you just dismissed him and told him you didn’t want to eat.
Later that evening Stephen came upstairs to go to bed. He knew you were upset, he wasn’t an idiot but he didn’t know how much this meant for you. You brought it up in conversation so freely and nonchalantly that he thought perhaps it was a suggestion that you didn’t really care about one way or another. If he agreed, great, if not oh well. Had he known you really wanted a child he would have been nicer about it and talked to you more.
You were pretending to be asleep when he came in. You heard him go to the closet and get out a pair of his pajama bottoms. After a few minutes you heard the sink in the bathroom that connected to your bedroom turn on. The sink turned off and a few seconds later you felt the bed dip beside you and a kiss being placed on your cheek.
“Hey.” You didn’t answer. “I know you're awake.”
“One of your witchy parlor tricks?” You sigh, turning to face him.
“Not quite. I saw you close your eyes when I opened the door…. Do you want to talk about it?”
“We already did that. You said no.”
“I know but… I wasn’t serious enough when we spoke. I can see this means a lot to you and I didn’t realize that. I thought maybe it was just something you felt we should do because we’re married, I didn’t realize it was something you actually wanted. You never talked about having children, you never even mentioned it in passing. I should have taken more time to listen to what you had to say and I’m sorry that I didn’t but I’m here to listen now.” He moved closer, resting his head on the same pillow and rubbing your side.
“I never thought I wanted kids but recently I’ve been craving having one. Every baby I see makes me want to have one and every time you're away it gets worse. I want someone in this house to love and hold when you're not here…. It gets lonely.” You confessed. You have never talked about what it was like for you when he was away on missions or saving the world. He knew it was a touchy topic and if you really wanted to talk about it you would so he left it alone.
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?” He brought his hand to caress your cheek.
“Because there’s nothing you could have done. Am I supposed to expect you to let the world burn down to accommodate me? That’s selfish. You have responsibilities, me telling you that I hate when you’re not here isn’t going to change anything for anyone. It'll only make us both feel bad.”
“I know but I want you to be able to tell me anything. I want to know what you’re feeling, what’s bothering you. You don’t have to hold it all in.”
“I appreciate that but I don’t see the point of complaining when nothing can be done.”
“Talk to me about the baby. Would you like to have a child with me? Do you think it would be safe here, do you think you can handle being here alone with a baby when I’m away? These are all things you need to think about and take into consideration before we make a decision. This is no normal job, I can't just take time off even though I wish I could.”
“I would love to have a baby with you, to have your baby. I think we could do some serious baby proofing of the house and I’m sure there are spells that could be cast in order to make the relics less dangerous. I’m sure I can take care of our baby while you're away. You’re never away for too long, a few weeks at most, I can manage while you’re gone. I think this could be good for us.”
“I think you’re right. I can’t deny something so special from the one I love. We’ll try for a baby.” He caressed your cheek bone with his thumb.
“Thank you.” You sigh, placing your hand over his, bringing it to your lips and kissing his palm.
