5 Signs of a Concussion to Take Seriously
There's no denying that a concussion (or possible concussion) is something not to be ignored. Not only is it a potentially dangerous head condition, it's one that can cause serious and/or lasting damage. The issue, however, becomes identifying when a concussion has taken place, and just how severe it could be.
If you suspect a loved one might have a concussion, be sure to look for these warning signs. You should also talk with your doctor or another health care professional about potential signals and symptoms so that you can seek treatment immediately.
1. Nausea and/or Vomiting
In the event of a concussion, patients often suffer from stomach issues, such as vomiting or nausea. If someone has thrown up after a head injury (or feels as though they might), it's important to get them immediate medical attention.
2. Confusion, Memory Loss, or Loss of Consciousness
Much like nausea, a concussion can be identified by head issues or changes in consciousness. If a patient is confused about where they are or what happened, can't remember recent events, or passes out after a head injury, they might be suffering from a concussion. It's important to get them to a doctor quickly, especially once consciousness has been lost.
This one is tricky, as heads are likely to hurt after being injured - whether there is a concussion or not. But a headache can also mean that one is suffering from a critical head condition. Pay careful attention to any headaches that might be taking place and talk to your healthcare provider about severity, length of time, and more.
4. Drowsiness or Dizziness
Another symptom to look for is that of unsteadiness. If someone is having a hard time seeing clearly, or standing tall and/or still, it might be a good indication that they're suffering from a concussion. Take notice of these ongoing symptoms, and whether or not they're accompanied by others. The same can be said of seeing double or blurred vision, which can indicate that the head has undergone some mild to serious trauma.
Believe it or not, someone with a concussion or recent concussion isn't just being angry because they're in pain; irritability can be an additional concussion symptom. Their brain is having a hard time adjusting to its recent injury, and one of the side effects to that swelling and/or healing process is acting out. A fact that often happens toward others who are in close proximity (likely because they are paying close attention or asking questions about the person's well-being).
There are several warning signs that you can spot concerning
a recent concussion. If you're worried that someone might be suffering, pay attention to the above red flags. You should also talk with a doctor as soon as possible to discuss proper treatment plans and steps of action that can lead toward their better health.
