Once a small jellybean Now a big bean
You were not a good dog. You hated just about everything except food, bitches, and Criminal Minds. For the first six months I had you, I couldn’t touch you at all; you would bite at the smallest perceived slight, guarded everything you found remotely valuable, and had already accumulated an extensive bite history.
You taught me so much about dog training, body language, and behaviour modification. I was in over my head with you, and you’ve remained my most difficult dog to date. The first day you came up to me and sat next to me on the couch, I nearly cried. You didn’t want to be touched (you NEVER liked to be touched), but you told me that you thought I was pretty okay by coming to sit with me. The left side of the couch became yours from that point on.
At 7 and a half years, you were diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. We were told you wouldn’t see 8. At 9 and a half you were diagnosed with mastocytoma, untreatable due to complications with DCM. We were told you wouldn’t see 10.
Today you turned ten years old. We stayed up until 3am watching Criminal Minds (your favourite show). You headtilted at the tv, stole my bag of cheese curls when I got up to use the toilet, and snarked at Rogue. You ate an impressive half a large bacon pizza and kicked me until I gave you knee scratches.
You have been my wingman, my best friend, my wiseass partner in crime for six years. You were the dog they said couldn’t be saved. Thank you, Remy, from the bottom of my heart. I can only hope I taught you as much as you did me. To quote Kansas (which you’ll enjoy because it’ll piss Rogue off): lay your weary head to rest. I expect you to be running the place next time I see you.
You weren’t a good dog, but you were my dog.
