A few more anecdotes about Gene, my Genius Dog:
Gene isn't afraid of anything that generally frightens Normal Dogs. Sirens? Eh. Thunderstorms? Nah. Dog next door that barks all the fucking time? You go for it, buddy. Sing your song.
This can sometimes be...unhelpful. Gene is overly fond of construction sites. He once became enamored with a guy using a MASSIVE CHAINSAW and tried to get me to go over and say hi. He likes big trucks and excavators and power tools. Gene isn't allowed to come into the workshop because I'm pretty sure he'd try to use the chop saw.
One day we went to the dog park and a bunch of pups started a howl chorus. Gene has never howled before, and the look on his face was exactly the same expression as a child in a school recital who was on vacation when their class learned the song: mortified and deeply confused.
Incredibly, Gene proceeded to join in by making a noise I can only describe as....moaning? "uhhHUHHH uhhWUHHh UUhhh WuHHH-" His eyes rolled in his head as he checked to see if the other dogs noticed he hadn't learned the melody. One of the huskies (the soloist) stopped howling just to stare at him, head cocked in confusion. The expression was mirrored on every human face: What the fuck just happened?
Gene looked properly chagrined - truly apologetic. We waited with bated breath...
Then he and the husky wrestled each other into the mud and went to drag a massive stick around the park together.
I love my weird son so much.

Hey friends! So many of you have already been voting and reblogging my posts to help Matcha stay in this competition, and I really can't thank you enough!! It's kind of unbelievable that we've even made it this far, and has given us something fun to focus on in a time of difficulty.
To keep things brief, I had to quit my job and become a full-time caretaker for my youngest brother back in November after he turned up in a hospital in MN due to circumstances that are still under investigation. We're currently living in Upstate NY, and making preparations to move to the Big Island of Hawaii to be with our mom, who also needs full-time support for developing medical conditions. It's heavy stuff! I've thought many times about putting together another GoFundMe to help with our situation, but I thought this would be a better avenue to ask for support in a way that wouldn't cost people anything.
So! If you've got a Facebook account and about 45 seconds of your time, you can cast one free vote for Matcha every 24 hours. If you've got a few bucks to spare, you can also pay for extra votes, which will go directly to the PAWS Foundation- a non-profit organization that helps animals that have been displaced by natural disasters. And, of course, we'd be grateful even if you were to just share this post! Thank you for reading!
Matcha was adopted from the Hawaii Big Island Humane Society in early 2020, and loves hiking, sailing, and stealing your seat!
