Tonight's history watching is the mini series The Ships That Changed the World. The series description states that tells the history of three great ships, the Titanic, the Bismarck, and the TS Canberra. But in reality it goes into the history of the shipbuilding, the agreements between them and shipping lines, the cities that host them and the countries that back them.
The first episode is entitled The Titanic and the Race of the Atlantic. Here is how that episode is described:
"By far the most famous, the Titanic was just one of nearly 2000 ships built by Harland & Wolff during the company's history. The shipyards of Belfast once produced no less than one eighth of the world's total shipping output. The saga of how that came to be is as grand as the Titanic herself."
So far the episode is very informative. The whole growth of shipbuilders Harlan and Wolff with the backing of J.P. Morgan coupled with the rise of the White Star Lines culminating in the HMS Titanic is fascinating. Also the political and religious backdrop to the city of Belfast of the period is something that I have seen briefly seen in other programs. I look forward to the rest of this episode and the other two in the series.
