“SS” Is Not Social Security: Contrary to what some Notaries and clients believe, the “SS,” that often appears in the venue portion of the notarial certificate is not a space for one’s Social Security number. The letters, which also appear as “SCT.”, are actually abbreviations of the Latin word Schilicet, meaning “namely” or “in particular.” Although the letters have appeared on Notary certificates for centuries, the absence of these two or three letters in the venue does not affect the validity of the certificate.  Learn more by joining us notaries of NC in our Thursday night live webinars all this month of December. PROOF OF CAPACITY: When performing any notarial act, it is the notary’s responsibility to identify the signer as an individual person; for example, Jane Smith or Mary Collins. In some instances, a person may sign the record in a representative or fiduciary capacity, such as a president or a guardian. If an individual signs a record and claims to be acting in a representative or fiduciary capacity, the signer is representing to the notary that he or she is signing the record on behalf of the person or entity represented and that he or she has the authority to do so.  A Notary Public is under no duty to verify whether the individual acted in a representative or fiduciary capacity or, if so, whether the individual was duly authorized to do so. A notarial certificate may include any of the following: A statement that an individual signed a record in a particular representative or fiduciary capacity. A statement that the individual who signed the record in a representative or fiduciary capacity had due authority to do so.  A statement identifying the represented person or entity or the fiduciary capacity.
