June 25: On this day in 1876 Native American warriors united and defeated George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
The United States government, its military forces, and white settlers had been campaigning along the Great Plains in an attempt to push the Native American communities into reservations. While some communities relocated without putting up a fight, others were not so easily subordinated.
The Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples joined forces boosting their military strength. Custer's powerful 7th Cavalry Regiment approached the battle with an air of overconfidence not knowing they were marching to their death.
Like Vietnam, the Battle of Little Bighorn is an example to oppressed and colonized peoples that guns, bombs and the latest military technology do not guarantee superiority.
