The day honors the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln signed the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865.

On December, 15, 1890, the chief and medicine man Sitting Bull was murdered by Indian police in the Standing Rock Reservation, North Dakota. He was responsible for the last victory of the indians over the 7th cavalry under General Custer at the Little Big Horn on July, 25-26, 1876.
