It was an abnormally sunny day in Anglesey, the salty breeze that wafted over the ocean was a welcomed feeling. Lightly spraying across Ginny’s face as she hovered in the air, water gently dusting her cheeks in salty freckles.
It was the second to last practice for the Harpies before they were to to have the first match of the season. Ginny Weasley, The Holyhead Harpies Chaser was a very much respected and loved member of the team. She knew that. They were like family. They always stood up for each other both on and off the Quidditch pitch, things were easy, simple, perfect even. That is everything that didn’t have to do with Luna Lovegood.
Loony they would call her. An unfortunate name that continued to follow her even after their Hogwarts days were long behind them. She still donned her infamous Butterbeer cap necklace. Claimed it went well with every outfit of hers. On warm sunny days like this she would sit in the grass - a comfortable distance from the field - and play with the strands beneath her. Creating all sorts of things. Whether it be anklets, rings, necklaces, even sandals. That never changed.
Always creating, always pondering, always there. Luna had been a constant in the witch’s life for the last ten years. A feat only rivaled by her family. After the war everyone had lost something, someone, everyone. After the loss of Fred, Ginny began to shut everyone out. It was especially hard for her to get close to George again. Every glimpse of him killed her little by little. He wasn’t Fred. He didn’t have to be, but he was a painful reminder that she had lost a brother and her mother - a son. Luna was the one who showed her that George struggled just as much, if not more. For he was the one who had to look in the mirror every day and see his other half that was no longer there with him.
It was Luna who had healed their family and brought life back to The Burrow. For the first five years after Fred’s death were the worst. Harry and Ginny grew apart at this time. An unassuaged anger filled her threatening and destroying all her relationships. The mixture of anger and grief became too much to bear - it suffocated them. The passionate flame that they once had was extinguished. She knew she should have felt something; anger and sadness, disappointment, anything. But she didn’t, she just felt… empty.
Luna came to the Burrow a year after the untimely death of her brother and six months after the death of her relationship. She found the redhead in the family garden that night looking up at the stars whispering to her brother.
“I hope wherever you are… there are loads of people and pranks to be had. I know that whoever you are with you are probably giving them hell.” A silent sob quietly erupted from her chest. The wistful blonde felt a type of burning pain pang her chest watching one of the strongest people she knew breakdown.
“I would give anything to be in that person’s place… I miss your annoying jokes and the way you used to tease me about Harry.” A single glistening tear rolled down her cheek as she pulled her knees to her chest. This time the sound of a cough filled the space between them, trying to cover up the sound of her strangled cries.
“You know… now that I think about it, you never did send me a toilet seat from Hogwarts.” A small chuckle replaced the sobs. Luna smiled softly to herself at that.
“Bunch of lying sods.” Everything seemed to stop, A peaceful silence this time overtook them.
“I love you Freddy… and I can’t wait to see you again.” A weight shifted beside Ginny as the girl felt an arm evelop her. Snapping her head to the left with the speed and precision only fear can instill brown eyes met silvery blue and the world stopped once more.
“Don’t worry Ginny. I am positive Fred is being well taken care of. He certainly can hear you.” she smiled.
“How can you possibly know that?” A bit of anger seeped through her words.
Luna looked around thoughtfully for a moment before she spoke, “You don’t trust me?” That same spacey and whimsical look and aura surrounded her. The slight venom laced in Ginny’s words seemed to bounce off her. She was unfazed.
“Do you not have faith?
“Pfft. Faith? What is there to have faith in? My brother is dead Loony and he isn’t coming back!” Looking back on that day Ginny feels ashamed. Ashamed that she called her friend and future lover something for the pure intention of hurting her. Ashamed that she didn’t have faith in her family and brother. Ashamed she closed herself off. Ashamed of everything she had done in her time of grieving.
Luna never got mad nor said anything about the comment, but Ginny saw it. The pain that flashed in her eyes, the way her smile wavered if even just for a moment. She had struck a cord.
“Maybe you just need someone to help you.” Her soft melodic voice whispered. Turning her back to the redhead Ginny began to panic. Was she leaving?
A rustling noise came from beside the girls as Luna retrieved something from her bag. Leaning onto her knees Luna maneuvered herself behind her. Pulling the loose strands of hair that clung to the front of her shirt back, A pair of dark blue and black spectrespecs came into view. Hooking the temples of the glasses around the backs of her ear she came in close, lips brushing against the soft flesh of Ginny’s earlobe and whispered, “Have faith in me.”
An involuntary shiver ran down her spine at the feeling of her breath hot against her ear . The smell of mint and apple filled her nose, two scents so seemingly different and shouldn’t smell so delectable but just did. The lenses were tinted dark. Squinting, she couldn’t tell what it was she was supposed to be looking for. Confusion must have been evident on her face as another smiled stretched across her face.
“Look over there, across the water.” A small pale hand pointed towards the treeline near the pond. Looking towards the edge of the wood Ginny could see small golden particles hovering in the air forming an outline of something horse-like.
“Do you see it? The creature? Tell me, What is it doing?”
Standing to her full height the witch took two calculated steps towards the water as she tried to make out what she was seeing. And then it dawned on her.
“Is that a…?”
“Yes. That is a Thestral. While they can only be seen by those who have witnessed death. I have found a way to use spectrespecs to see the outline of these creatures that seem to have things much like wrackspurts floating around them. Tell me, is he bowing to you?” Unknown to Ginny that Luna could see exactly what the Thestral was doing she nodded dumbly, unsure what to say.
“What does it mean?”
“Think of them like messengers of the dead… they appear in times when we wish to talk to those who have passed on. I see them often when I talk to my mum. They seem to listen and relay the message.”
Tears began to fall again, but this time not out of grieving but out of happiness and faith. Faith that Fred could hear her and knew how much she loved and missed him.
Then Luna hugged her, consoling her as she cried into her chest. Two girls, both unaware of just how much they both needed each other stayed like that for what seemed like forever. Neither minded.
“Stay.” Was all Ginny said.
Luna nodded.

“Weasley!” Snapping out of her memory Ginny looked up to see Aria Prince the Harpies Seeker looking at her as she leveled her broom with hers. A sheepish grin reached her lips, though the smile didn’t quite meet her eyes.
“Sorry, I thought we were taking a break seeing as it took over 20 minutes to get McLaggen’s head out of her arse to even figure out where she put the snitch and quaffle.” Both girl’s laughs drowned out the angry mumbles from the other teammates.
“Oi, at least I am not daydreaming about my bloody girlfriend on the field Weasley!” The yells of Hannah McLaggen could be heard clear across the pitch.
“Give her a break Hannah, the poor girl is dating Loony Lovegood! I hear she is absolutely mental!” Another shout, though from who Ginny couldn’t see. Gripping the shaft of her Nimbus 2009 protectively she felt her shoulders go rigid. She had had enough of the snide remarks. Which is probably what caused the incident to happen from what followed next.
“Yeah I hear she’s a proper nutter that one! Look at her sitting in the grass making grass rings and flower crowns. She is not batting on a full wicket if you know what I me-” That was the final straw. Flying full speed towards the teammate who had just spoken - Seraphina Evans - Ginny plowed her broom right into the woman knocking her off. Not before she got a swing in though, right to the nose and eye. A steady stream of red began to flow from Evan’s nose as she lay in a crumpled heap below on the field.
Before any of her teammates could stop her Ginny landed beside the woman. Throwing her broomstick alongside her she spoke loudly and clearly so every single one of her team members could hear.
“Now you listen here you manky, plug ugly, arselicking, trollop! If I EVER catch you talking about MY girl like that again you will have more than a broken nose and questionable bruising to deal with. Do you understand me?!” A muffled groan of understanding escaped from the bloody pile that was Seraphina. Looking towards her other teammates with a look of contempt the rest of her team nodded in silent agreement. Without another word Ginny yanked her Quidditch jersey over her head and made her way towards the spot Luna sat.
Blood stained Ginny’s knuckles, that was the first thing Luna noticed.
“Ginny, what was that about?” Worry clouded her eyes as she reached for her lover’s hand.
“It’s not mine. Don’t worry about it.” Kissing the top of the blonde’s head she sat beside Luna slinging an arm around her shoulders pulling her close.
“I love you, you know that?”
A playful knock of shoulders and a cheerful laugh sprung from her lips.
“Of course I do. Here, this is for you.” A crown made of wildflowers lay in her small hands, a token of her love. Just for her.
“I had some flowers left over… What do you think we should do with them?” It was Ginny’s turn to smile, for the blonde which had no idea what her sentence had just inspired.
Quickly untying her boots Ginny gathered up all the leftover flowers that were left unused. Standing up with boots in hand she offered her hand out to Luna.
“Come with me?”
That smile. The smile Luna gave when she knew Ginny was up to something graced her face. Nodding, she grabbed her sweets hand hoisting herself up.
Leading the way. Ginny led them both towards the pitch once more. All of her teammates cleared the way for them as the hoops came closer into view.
Reaching into her back pocket Ginny withdrew her wand and casted a nonverbal levitation spell. Watching the pair of boots that were now tied together float up towards the Quidditch caused immeasurable joy for Luna as she began to clap more to herself than anyone else. Wrapping the shoelaces tightly around the equipment she cast a nonverbal stasis charm to keep it in place.
Admiring her spellwork she could feel Luna’s arms wrap around her waist squeezing her tightly.
“To stay?” Luna asked softly?
Ginny smiled, turning to the girl wound tightly around her she pressed a final kiss to her forehead. “To Stay.”
