I loved working on this beautiful custom quilt for a family who are expecting a rainbow baby. The custom embroidery on back was very personal for them, reminding them that miracles can happen after loss.

custom weighted blanket commissions!

hey guys, so as you may have noticed from the millions of posts i’ve made it the past, money is hard to come by. so here’s the deal. i’m doing commissions for custom weighted blankets.

why should i get a weighted blanket, you ask? isn’t that like.. money?? yes it is money but it is also a sweet sweet feeling to sleep with weight on top of you. deep touch pressure therapy can help combat anxiety. for those of you who may have restless leg syndrome, it helps alleviate that and keep it from getting worse while in bed. it can help with sensory issues. its like a big hug without the fear that a person could hurt you in said hug. 

now that you know why you need it, let’s talk size and pricing.

- the insert i’m looking at buying from walmart is 42″x72″, so the blanket will be made that size. - here’s some regular prices i’ll be charging, but don’t get too discouraged because i’ll be discounting all blankets while the insert is on rollback at walmart. this is just the prices before the discounts, from lowest to highest, shipping not included. Arranged like front fabric/back fabric - broadcloth/broadcloth $100 - broadcloth/flannel $100 - broadcloth/cotton $110 - broadcloth/fleece $120 - cotton/cotton $120 - flannel/flannel $120 - broadcloth/minky $130 - cotton/fleece $130 - flannel/fleece $130 - flannel/minky $130 - cotton/minky $140 - fleece/minky $140 - minky/minky $150

- designs can be painted on broadcloth or cotton for a small additional fee depending on design

once initial blanket is bought, you can purchase more exchangeable blankets to put the insert in. i’ll be making the blankets with zippers so that exchange goes a lot easier. just subtract $50 from cost if ur not getting the insert.

The Top for this custom order quilt is complete (Quilt-as-you-Go Method). The Customer wanted family pictures on the quilt so we did 9 Collages of Pictures. Did my best to center them. Now to add the solid purple flannel backing! This is a Queen size so I will need to take it to the Library to use thier tables to add the backing. PS: I'll get better pictures at the Library!

I have been asked to make a Minecraft Quilt. She wants the individual blocks like this. We found a website that shows the individual blocks up close so I can see how the pieces are put together but it doesn’t give the measurements of the blocks or the pieces to make the blocks. I'm sure I can do it but it would be so helpful to have the measurements.

Quilt Made From Natural Dyes

I have been experimenting and teaching myself how to dye fabric using plants, bugs and food. I’ve tried blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, elderberries, yellow onion, red cabbage, coffee, turmeric, black beans, cochineal, basil, avocado, black walnuts and Queen Anne’s lace. While I learned that all of these make beautifully humble colors, some are very colorfast and others fade quickly. 

In comes the alchemy. After my first experiment over the summer, I decided to take it to the next level and began preparing the fabric to hold color longer. By scouring the cotton and using an alum mordant, I was able to trust that more of the colors I created would stick to the fiber. 

I was elated when a sweet friend, whom I met while traveling to Chicago for Etsy a few years back, reached out about a custom crib size quilt. Save for the very dark gray and a few of the light gray triangles, every piece was dyed in my kitchen.

Warm Whites/Light Tan - Coffee, green basil, black walnuts. (I don’t think green basil is generally used for natural dyeing, but I thought I’d try it anyway. I got this vintage-y ivory and love it but I probably wouldn’t waste delicious basil again, rather make pesto.)

Yellows/Peaches - Yellow onion skins, turmeric, Queen Anne’s lace. 

Blues/Grays - Black beans

Pinks - Avocado pits and skins, cochineal 

Greens - Double dip-dyed in Queen Anne’s lace (yellow) then black beans (blue). 

Let’s talk about dyeing with berries - I got incredible colors using blueberries and blackberries. However, after joining a natural dye group on FB, I learned that berries don’t dye fabric, but rather stain. Elderberries - I’ll only use them to make syrup from now on. Raspberries - I’ll just eat those. 

For the bibs, I chose to buy colors from Robert Kaufman Kona Solids that complimented the quilt colors. The majority of the quilt back and all the binding are Kona Bone.
