The dresser build is complete. There are a total of 17 drawers. Each drawer has dividers in one of these 4 patterns for socks or 3 different sizes of underwear. This was a long project, about 180 hours over the course of a month and a half. My next 4 projects are lined up and are much smaller than this one. Up next are a computer stand with table top, clothes hamper, tortilla press, and tortillero. After applying water based GF High Performance to the underside of the top and drawers I was not happy with the results at all. It just doesn't give the chatoyance or depth that an oil based finish gives. I'm leaving the High Performance on the underside but the dresser top and the drawer interior/front will be done with Arm-R-Seal. I decided to make an indoor spray station since the temperature dropped again and it brought more snow. The case is getting the finish hand applied and I have to say this goes on much easier than Minwax. The end of this project is in sight. All of the parts are complete and we've reached the most important phase: final sanding. Even though all of the parts have been finish sanded, they have been in the workshop for a few weeks getting minor hits and bangs, not to mention the drawers being put in and out dozens of times. This is the glue up for the dresser top. Since I only have a 6" bench top jointer I skip planed the boards so they're not perfectly flat. To make sure they stay flat once the glue dries I used some beefy cauls to hold them down to the work bench. I used a router sled to flatten it when I built it so it should be dead flat. I also used some dominoes to help keep them in line with each other. The dominoes aren't glued in since they're just for alignment and not structural. To help keep the top flat over the years its going to get breadboard ends. I'll leave it clamped up until tomorrow night to give the glue plenty of time to cure. The drawer runners are all fit for each drawer but they don't get attached until after the finish goes on. Now it's just down to making the top. I saved a couple of the more interesting wormy maple gor this and I just love all the colors. That's enough wotk for today. Here are a couple other options I considered for drawer pulls. The first one is a dowel and block style. I made the block from walnut cutoffs and the dowel from wormy maple cutoffs. I really like the look, just not for this project. The second is a thinner version of the original pulls with a hollow center. I like the look of it as well but it feels a bit too delicate. The option I'm going with is the same metal pulls I purchased for the chest of drawers I made a few years ago. I started making the drawer pulls today but decided I need to deviate from the original plan. Since I decided to use wormy maple for the drawer fronts, because I made sure to continue the grain pattern from drawer to drawer, and because each drawer is only 2 1/2" tall I feel like these pulls will hide a lot of what I chose the maple for in the first place. This is the current progress. The drawers are done and glued up. There were a two hiccups along the way but nothing show stopping. First, when I added the groove for the drawer bottom in the top middle drawer I placed it on the wrong side, so that row doesn't have continuous grain, but I can live with it. Second, I didn't take the drawer height only being 2 1/2" tall when I ordered the drawer slides so the slides are too tall. New slides are on the way and should be here next week.
