Hellfire and Copy Paper
I tried my darndest not to sneeze as the burning smell of brimstone and ozone clogged my nose.
“I apologize for the inconvenience sir, but we simply cannot approve your request until the proper certifications have passed through our systems”
A grating wheeze from my client blew tarry smoke in my face before he spoke
“So what am I supposed to do until then huh! I already passed my shifts off at work, my family’s got our bags packed and ready to go and you’re telling me I gotta send em back cause our license to go topside is revoked?”
“My apologies sir but we simply can’t allow you to reach the human world, without the necessary forms”
Dark smoke began to roll off my client and the haze surrounding him blurred his form.
“Don’t play with me girl!” His voice rose like thunder and judgement. I fought off a splitting headache and raised an eyebrow at him.
“If you wish to expedite your process. Please see Management for Veil Passage, three halls back, one floor down.” I said mechanically. “NEXT” I peeked around the black and spiky shoulders of my current annoyance, trying to catch the eye of the next demon in line.
My break came three hours later, I huddled in the pitiful staff room with a few of my coworkers. We all shared heavy sighs and dull stares.
Another day down. That much closer to fulfilling my side of the bargain.
………….
It all started three weeks ago.
I work the service desk at a department store. I had just finished a suitably horrible shift. Between cleaning up a smelly and unspeakable mess in a changing room and trying to convince a lady that she could not return a t shirt that she had bought 20 years ago, I was pretty spent.
I had just crashed onto my couch when a circle made of fire bloomed in my floorboards.
“Holy Hotwings!” I yelped, rising to my feet ready to run to the kitchen and grab the extinguisher. Then, a black leathery hand reached out of the blackness inside the circle. Soon a head and dark bat wings exited as well. It was a demon. An honest to goodness demon.
What came out of it’s mouth next was not what one would expect from a demon.
“You work at the mall right?” It asked, in a voice that was certainly grating but not unfriendly.
I had to open and close my mouth a few times before anything would come out. “Yeah why?”
It’s eyes widened and burned a fiery red. “Great! You’re exactly what I need!” It grabbed me by the front of my shirt and dragged me into the hole in my floor without further explanation.
……….
I plopped back down in my station and flipped the sign hanging above me to say “Window Open”. A long and formidable queue of demons was filed out the door of the office. A rather slimy specimen with multiple arms scuttled forward.
“I’m here to get my Wyvern license renewed” it rustled from one of its many orifices. A rotten smell blasted across my face as she spoke.
“I’m sorry ma’am but Wyvern licenses are one floor down in the Lower Department of Licensure”
She sucked inward slightly
“You’re telling me I waited in that line for NOTHING” she hissed, bits of goop flew out of her mouth, several droplets went airborne and stuck to my glasses. I held in a groan.
“I’m terribly sorry ma’am, you’ll need to go to room Excubis 15 Delta. Ralipast is managing down there. Please see HIM” I said forcefully.
She spit another blast to goo before twisting herself like a dishrag and scuttling back towards the door.
“Next” I said with a smile made of gritted teeth. I did not bother to wipe the goo off my glasses as the next demon in line was belching black smoke that I knew would leave chalky residue everywhere.
…………
Why was I working as an office drone for demons you ask? That demon who popped through my floorboards was supposed to be running this horror show of a bureaucracy. However, he and one of his coworkers had struck up a little bet .
“So this is a ‘customer service employee?’ The hulking demon asked. He was basically a Minotaur with crab legs. His giant floppy cow ears reminding me of a field trip my class took to a farm when I was 10.
“Yep! Now I bet you 500 souls in purgatory that she can do your job better than you!” The bat wing demon (he had introduced himself as Cody, short for Malacoda) said with unholy glee.
The bovine demon leaned down in my face. “Please! She won’t last 5 minutes!”
“Doing what? Mooing at people?” I asked, bothered by this giant sirloin’s disregard for personal space. His big fuzzy ears flopped in annoyance.
“I happen to have one of the most important jobs in the lowerarchy!” He snapped, stomping a crab foot and making a cracking sound.
“I command the demons of the realm in their passage to the human world. I determine who goes and who stays! I am the final authority on passage through the veil!” He gestured broadly and excitedly with his front two crab legs.
“He’s a border agent. And his job boils down to stamping forms” Cody chuckled in his grating, screeching goat voice. He ushered me aside “look, I think that you can handle his job for a month. If you do I’ll make sure all you student debt gets paid off”
I practically started shaking at the prospect.
“Seriously! I keep this job for a month and you’ll cover my student loans?” I asked, more than a little flabbergasted.
“Yeah, but I gotta warm you it won’t be easy. Demons are worse than soccer moms when it comes to bureaucracy” he responded, already seeing the dollar signs in my eyes. I pulled back for a second.
“How about, I hold this job for a month. You cover my loans AND pay off my car” I say, stiffening my shoulders and trying to look professional. The demon breaks into laughter that sounds like a million goats dying.
“You got a deal human!. Just make that old cow eat his words”
…….
It. Was actually not the worst job I’d ever had to hold down. As it turns out, mopping up fresh blood is not nearly so pungent as the bathroom at most fast food places. Furthermore, demons absolutely suck at paperwork, but once I had the departments down I was actually able to expedite the process of getting demons to turn in their paperwork to the right offices. I increased efficiency by about 12% all things said and done. At the end of my four weeks there, the undersecretary of the department asked me to stay on for an internship.
I said maybe, by that point knowing not to give a straight answer to a demon. He seemed impressed.
When Cody dropped me off back in my apartment I had zero dollars in student loan debt and a paid off car. Not bad for a months work. Even if my hair still smells like brimstone.
Well, here for some Lunch. I sure as hell hope the Food is better than your customer service.🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ #customerservicesucks #smfh (at Oh Brother Philly) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Ohv5MH1Be/?igshid=c8b4963t5qr9

Thou Shalt Not Eat
It was a peaceful morning working on the workshop with hubby and his friend. When we’d done as much as we could before the inspection we decided to go to breakfast. Saturday is off to a good start.
On the way to breakfast I checked the messages that were suddenly coming in. Angry Client is home for the weekend and she is MAD! She had offered the overnight pet sitter, who’d been staying at her house for 12 nights straight this time and who had the missed morning chat last week, $100 to clean her house so she could come home and rest over the weekend before going back early Monday morning.
Angry Client and the sitter were messaging back and forth about the condition of the house and yard. I interjected and said I was at breakfast but would call her afterwards to talk to her about it. She said it must be nice and then chat went silent. I messaged the sitter privately to ask her about the condition of the yard and to get her side of the story as I was very surprised that Angry Client was not absolutely delighted when she got home based on the messages and pictures from last night when the sitter was cleaning the house and asking questions about dusting knick knacks and using replacement blankets for the couch while washing the ones that were on it.
I checked my phone while the bill was being paid and hubby and friend were discussing the various things needed to make a kayak. I hear white noise when they start talking about router bits and shellac. Angry Client had sent this alarming message.
I left the restaurant to go stand in the shade of a tree and hear her out. She was breathing hard and almost crying. Her house had not been cleaned and the sitter must have just been watching TV while texting her that she was cleaning it. And she must have disturbed all the cleaning products under the sink to make it look like she had been cleaning because they weren’t tidy.
She sent the picture of the dust and another of the “completely dead grass” that she is “spending a fortune with the lawn guy to hopefully restore it before the monsoons come and make a mess” of her yard. I did not tell her that it wasn’t until Day 10 that she asked the sitter to turn on the sprinklers for 30 minutes a day and that this is likely the reason the grass isn’t beautiful. It is hardly dead. It has been hot and dry and we have had 11 wildfires in the area this week so everything is parched.
The sitter replied to my message with a long list of the things she’d done to clean the house for the client. Among other things, she was on her hands and knees scrubbing the tile floor, she cleaned up the yard and sprayed down the patio, she vacuumed the house and washed all the pet bowls and cleaned the bathrooms. She was very upset at the client’s reaction.
We are going to all meet tomorrow so Angry Client and Pet Sitter can discuss the issues. I told Angry Client I am not willing to ruin my business reputation to give this relationship one more chance this coming week only to have her come home and (being impossible to please) rant on social media that we are horrible. I said I would rather have a different sitter do the job. But I’ve since realized all of my other overnight sitters are staying elsewhere next week and I am stuck between an Angry Client and a very Upset Sitter with my business on the line. Hopefully the meeting goes well but I will need to find a way to tell the client that we do not operate a house cleaning service and suggest that she hire someone to come and do that job who is experienced with the finest details.
Meanwhile, Chaos Client (so named because she does not speak in complete sentences which makes her difficult to understand and has roommates who are in a state of flux) is camping this weekend and the two sitters taking care of her pets have been messaging up a storm today. She hadn’t put the cone on the dog who was injured two days before she left so he had ripped it mostly off before the sitter got there. The sitter put the cone on and told me the client had told her to take him to the vet if he needed to be bandaged because he wasn’t a willing patient. It was 6:15 am and no vet is open until 9 am. We can’t reach the client to try to clarify anything because she is camping.
The next sitter to visit managed to rebandage his foot but was unsure whether to take him to the vet. Chaos Client didn’t have any vet wrap so I bought some at WalMart and dropped it off where I found unknown people going in and out of the house but Chaos Client wasn’t home. From what I could gather one of the women was the sister of the roommate who had moved out. Um Ok. Here, put this vet wrap on the kitchen counter.
More messages. The sitters are upset that there are 3 chickens being kept in a small wire cage outside and apparently every time Chaos Client orders a coop for them it is broken when it arrives. Just make sure they have food and fresh water and shade. Oh and see if she still has cats in a back bedroom.
Injured Sitter said she is willing to do the Angry Client job with all the caveats. Luckily, X-Rays at urgent care this morning show that she didn’t break her collarbone when she tripped and fell last night while visiting Great Dane Client. Injured Sitter is available to meet Angry Client tomorrow afternoon but she can’t start until the week after next. She promises to clean things that are clean.
The only sitter I would trust with this job is Betrayal Sitter (see other post wherein she had given her phone number on Facebook to Backstabber Client who wanted to hire her behind my back and the sitter told her to call anytime). But Betrayal Sitter and I still need to have The Talk about her non-solicitation clause and I couldn’t do that when she called me today because I was crying in the WalMart parking lot.
How @StandardBankZA moves you and your business backward!
Below is my experience - as a Standard bank business account holder - while attempting to complete a business transaction with Standard Bank in their Fourways branch. (Note: the times indicated are as per the clock on my mobile phone.)
I Arrived at the bank at 14:04 to effect a business transaction with my business banker. I am told by the business banking receptionist that the two (2) business bankers on site are currently unavailable until about 2:30. I was then informed that I could effect my transaction by seeing a service consultant......so off I went to see a service consultant.
On enquiring about seeing a service consultant at the other banking receptionist, I was also advised that I would need to wait until about 2:30 for service, I remarked at the low levels of service especially as it was exactly this as well as the lack of accountability that had brought me into the branch itself, his reply was a simple and rather biased - “That's your opinion”!
At 14:18 I was called to a counter by a lady who never introduced herself.
Sitting across from the service consultant, I spent more than 10 minutes watching her furiously type away on her computer, with not one word passing between the two of us other than her requesting my ID, bank card and whether or not I had the branch name. The point being – more than 10 minutes to input my ID and account number – WTF!!!!!
It was 14:31 before the first document emerged from the printer which was promptly ripped up. It was at this point that I enquired as to the charges for the business transaction I was wanting to complete. Her answer was that she did not know!!
At 14:33 I was requested to supply the beneficiary details for my intended business transaction. The next document emerged at 14:36. At this point the address of the beneficiary was requested. Another document then emerged from the printer at 14:38 with the recently requested address now printed on it.
She then left the counter to go and calculate the fee for the requested business transaction. At 14:59 (21 minutes later) the service consultant returned and I was finally advised of the bank's charges that I would incur for the transaction and was then asked if I still wanted to continue with the intended transaction. When I enquired why it had taken more than 20 minutes to get the requested bank charges, her reply was a very baffling “its not on my system!”.
Following my positive response, my business at Standard Bank Fourways was finally concluded at 15:02! Almost an hour to do a simple business banking transaction!
Now I know your first thought is probably, why did you not do this online, and you would be correct in asking that – the fact of the matter is that this particular transaction required us to go into the bank. In a world where every banking organisation is pushing to have less branch interaction, on Standard Bank wants you to visit the branch. There is nothing like being behind the curve.
Despite the numerous issues that the above personal account raises as to a typical customer experience, a further major concern is the time stamp on the transaction receipt – 14:39 – 20 minutes earlier than the actual event!
The background to this blog was the shocking levels of customer service and assistance when we first approached the bank to open the business account. Upon reflection, I ask myself, does partnering with Standard Bank really move me and my business forward because my experience at the branch was merely just an opinion......
PS. Before going to the branch, I called the Branch Manager on his mobile phone and left a message for him to call me. At the time of posting this – 1 day later – I have still not received a return call!! Added to this personal account, during the above outlined process, another client complained rather vocally about the service she was experiencing when all she wanted to do was collect her card!
