Australian Busking Tour: Sydney (part 2) + random thoughts
Today marks my third month in Australia. Three months! Time sure flies. I am not missing much from back home besides my mom. And the fries. And maybe the busking too. The busking scene Down Under is so different compared to Europe.
What has happened since my last blog post? Well… The Sunshine Coast did not look very buskable but I did play at the Eumundi Markets and on open mic nights. After that we went up to Noosa. We camped there for a couple of days and now we are slowly heading back down to Melbourne. Ooh I also climbed a mountain. Mount Warning: I have never sweated so much in my life!
I am currently in Sydney. I tried busking in again in CBD yesterday. I figured I should check out Pitt Street Mall again. For some reason I didn’t see any buskers there. So I took a chance, set up and started playing. After three songs I got told off by a fellow busker. He was kind, his name was Richard (artist name Cuzn, go check him out!). But he said that in the Mall street performers aren’t allowed to play before 2PM during the week. A ridiculous rule. He also said that if the rangers catch anyone not following the rules they can screw over all the other street performers by putting up a busking ban the next day. So everyone has to keep an eye on each other.
Good thing I came down this street with no expectations so I didn’t mind packing up. Richard was waiting to get the 2PM spot. He has been waiting since early morning. He wouldn’t tell me the exact hour though. :p It’s a dog eat dog world. I also met the guy that would go after him: Imre, he’s a clown from Hungary. And I saw the other guys who were lining up. Anyone else who wanted to have a go on this spot would have to wait at least four hours. I didn’t bother. All of them were equipped with entire PA systems.
I did try at the other end of the street. Less people but still decent foot traffic. I think I only lasted 20 minutes. Then my throat hinted me that I should stop. Noisy. The longer I am in ANY city in Australia the more I realise that I can’t do what I do without an amplifier. I don’t like the thought. I am doing just fine unplugged. Back home I am one of the loudest acoustic street performers. But I am in a different country. And even back home I had to get my own amp because everything is getting noisier. I REALLY don’t want to drag all that weight around. Although, I am considering getting an amplifier and a microphone once I get back to Melbourne.
Since I have no pics to go with this part, here is a pic of me staring at a koala. :p It was cute! And fluffy!
There is so much other stuff I want to do too. I still want to see Adelaide and perform there. I also want to visit New Zealand… Despite the fact that busking hasn’t been good lately, I am having a really good time. I am feeling really happy. My flight back home is in May. As you might have expected I won’t be going back yet. :p I want to stay longer. Officially I can stay until November. I should make full use of that time, no?
I am even thinking about getting my second year visa. In order to get one I have to do farming work for at least 88 days, that’s another three months. I did hear and read some horrifying stories about backpackers doing farming work. It’s also VERY hard work. Imagine picking fruit for hours at 40 degrees or higher. So I am not very keen on doing that. Of course there are loop holes and farming work might as well be working as an au pair or serving drinks in a regional area. I will have to do some more research. OR if you know anything about this stuff, let me know. :)
Also, my Patreon page is ALMOST ready to launch. I just need to make one good pitch video. I will keep you posted. ;)
