Sorry, but even as someone with ... significant emotional scarring from being raised Mormon as a lesbian, I have to defend their honor on this one. Scavenger hunts and treasure hunts are super common as church/religious activities in Mormonism, and Easter egg hunting is a huge deal—I'm not sure who from any kind of Mormon background would suggest otherwise, unless this has changed drastically in the last 15 years.
My born-and-raised-Mormon mother and grandparents went all out for dying and painting Easter eggs and Easter presents for everyone to track down when I was growing up, both with real eggs and wooden ones my grandfather hand-painted to add a bit of extra flair. I actually still have the wooden egg he painted for me in 1997 that would be part of the Easter egg hunt (each one of us had a personalized "egg" with our name somewhere on it: he painted mine in honor of my favorite sea animal, years before the ship-attacking orcas became a meme):
