Kai never liked the ocean. It was scary, cold, and dark. He heard of the tales of merpeople and their kingdom. They were cold and cruel, but Kai would disagree on that. The only cold merperson he knew was the king. Kai learned that the hard way.
It all started when Kai was five. He was on a ship with his mom, dad, and Nya, his sister. Kai stayed near his mom during the time. He heard a splash, and it scared him.
“Mommy!” Kai cried while hugging his mother’s leg.
“What’s wrong?” Maya asked.
“T-There was a big splash! It was loud and scary a-and-”
“Shhh, it’s alright. I’m here.”
Maya bent down and hugged Kai back. She started to hum, calming her crying son down.
“Do you feel better?” Maya asked.
“Mmhmm,” Kai nodded.
“Why don’t we go inside? Your dad is making chocolate and lollipops.”
Kai nodded. Maya picked him up and carried him inside.
“And that is how you perfect a lollipop, Nya,” Ray informed.
Nya clapped while giggling. Maya put Kai down, and he walked to Ray.
“Daddy?” Kai spoke. “Can I have a lollipop and chocolate, please?”
“Of course, sunshine,” Ray said. “Give me one second.”
As Kai waited for his dad, something hit the young boy’s head. He fell to the floor and closed his eyes. He swore they were only closed for a second. When Kai opened his eyes, there was a merman in front of him.
“W-Who are you?” Kai asked.
The merman smiled.
“I’m your grandfather, Kai,” he answered.
“Where’s Mommy and Daddy and Nya?”
“They are on the surface.”
Kai was confused. He looked at himself and saw he had a mermaid tail.
“Where did my legs go?” Kai asked.
“You don’t have them anymore,” the grandfather answered. “You are a mermaid now.”
“Why am I mermaid?”
“So you can live in Atlantis.”
“What about Mommy and Daddy and Nya?”
“They won’t be able to come for a while.”
Kai started to cry.
“Do not worry, child,” The grandfather said. “You will live with me in the palace until they come. You will be fed and taken care of by the servants. You’ll be known as a prince, and everyone will love you.”
“P-Promise?” Kai questioned.
“I promise.”
The grandfather led Kai to Atlantis.
When Kai thinks about it now, he feels foolish to trust the king easily. While he was Kai’s grandfather, the king lied about Maya, Ray, and Nya coming. Kai knew he was stuck in the ocean for the rest of his life to become the next king.
