Hi! Maybe I'm getting ahead storywise or perhaps I'm overthinking stuff but while I was rewatching OB S1 I started wondering about Sarah's past. Mainly why Sarah is "Manning"? I mean, who were the Mannings? Is "Sarah Manning" even Sarah's real name? what if Carlton made up that name when he gave her to Mrs. S? 'cause something tells me Amelia's last name wasn't Manning.

So, you know what, I was also wondering this a while ago.

Personally, I'd always thought that Sarah was probably just given the name 'Manning' as a kind of placeholder name (because I have friends from the UK with the last name Manning, so I just assumed it was pretty common there?). Or, I don't know, Amelia just picked it randomly. It does have a kind of everyman ambiguity to it (which her first name happens to have as well). 

But, I wouldn't read too much into where the name came from. The fact of the matter is, everyone has to have a last name. It doesn't always matter how they got it. What does matter is the ring that it has, the way it sounds, what it means, how it matches up with our characters. And, in Sarah's case, I think it fits just right.
