This episode is perfect for Halloween!
Cyber Commander
The more I look at Tristan’s hair the more I realize it’s a complete enigma. I’ve NEVER seen it move on its own even when other characters’ hair is being blown around, even when he’s active it barely seems to move, and if Pyramid of Light is any indication it seems to be a solid object. I could go on about how maybe it’s a metaphor for him being an anchor and rock for his friends, keeping them steady even when he doesn’t get much focus, but it’s more likely he just has a really good stylist and good hair gel. XD I wonder if his sister helps with his hair or if he does it on his own.
Awww, according to the YGO Wiki Tristan has lines in Duel Links for using Yugi and Joey’s ace monsters as well as his Capsule Monsters set, and Cyber Commander, among others! ^^ They went all-out with every iteration of monsters he could use!

When Tristan Summons "Dark Magician", he announces "I've got nothing to fear with this guy on my side! Yugi's main dude: Dark Magician!” Most of the time when Tristan declares an attack with that monster, he announces “You've got this, Dark Magician! Dark Magic Attack!”
When Tristan Summons "Red-Eyes B. Dragon", he announces "Joey's monster is here for the rescue! Red-Eyes Black Dragon!” Most of the time when Tristan declares an attack with that monster, he announces "It's all on you, Red-Eyes Black Dragon! Inferno Fire Blast!"
When Tristan Summons "Cyber Commander", he announces "Here comes Cyber Commander!" Most of the time when Tristan declares an attack with that monster, he announces "Just lettin' you know, I'm quite the sharpshooter! Fire, Cyber Commander!"
When Tristan Summons "Shovel Crusher", he announces "I Summon Shovel Crusher!" Most of the time when Tristan declares an attack with that monster, he announces "Smash 'em, Shovel Crusher!"
When Tristan Summons "Thunder Kid", he announces "I Summon this little fella! Thunder Kid!" Most of the time when Tristan declares an attack with that monster, he announces "Thunder Kid, shock 'em!"
I was thinking about Tristan earlier and how he fit in with Yugi’s group, as well as standing on his own as a character. A lot of people tend to underestimate him because he’s not a duelist or kinda forget about him because after Duelist Kingdom he’s not as active a force, but I think what makes him special and worth reexamining is how he has elements from all of his friends, as well as standing on his own. Tristan is brave, strong, and down-to-earth like Joey, and sticks close with him more than anyone else, like Yugi’s relationships with Yami Yugi and Joey; they complement each other and he has stuff Joey doesn’t and vice versa. Like Tea, he’s quick to cheer his friends on and offer advice if they need support. Like Ryou, he’s good at thinking rationally as well as improvising.
Tristan’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for, too, and just as determined as Yugi to never back down from a challenge. He improvised and enacted a plan to take out Yami Bakura in the anime and had it work, which is really impressive considering how much Bakura himself improvises plans. In Capsule Monsters he came up with a risky but effective plan to defeat a monster and solved a riddle while being attacked, both of which involved putting himself in danger, and in Pyramid of Light he stood by Joey in comedic moments and serious moments, helping defend Tea and Yugi from rabid fans and Anubis’s mummies. He also saved everyone in the anime at Battle City by pointing out Kaiba’s helicopter to escape the island!
Tristan’s capacity to think rationally even when crazy stuff is going on--even if it’s just to acknowledge crazy stuff is happening--helps ground the series and make it, and him, more relatable. In the manga we’re shown he’s a good shot, and the anime enforces this with his favored cards having a military theme, suggesting interests outside gaming as well. I think what’s really neat about Tristan is that he’s adaptable--the combination of how little we know about him, with the pieces we do see, means he can fit in just about anywhere and do anything, and it’d still make sense for his character.
I like how Dark Magician is regular Yugi’s favorite card too ^^ Or at least the one he identifies most with. I wonder if Yami Bakura also liked Change of Heart. (It’s the only magic card among their favorite cards!)
The Core Four’s deck leaders.
I feel bad but all I could think when I saw that was “Ryou Bakura was left out” XD Though his favorite was a magic card, and he was on the other side of the fire so he’d need a really long arm to join in.
