So I’m not sure how many here are all that into brainstorming custom Yugioh cards, but this is a very fun little idea borne out of a combination of a conversation with a friend of mine like a year ago, my own musings on how to let Asuka Tenjoin be the total badass she deserves to be, and some pretty cool art I found recently:

Consider if you will; an alternate version of GX wherein, as a contrast to her brother, Asuka/Alexis uses the Blue Eyes White Dragon.

Heck, if we consider her canon use of White Night Dragon, or for it's more direct translation; Blue Ice White Night's Dragon, there's even something of a precedence for something like this XD

Now to make this more interesting, I am following a number of guidelines:

Firstly, Asuka specifically only has one Blue Eyes White Dragon. And it is notably NOT one of Kaiba’s. Instead, as would be revealed later in this hypothetical AU, Asuka possesses the fourth copy of Blue Eyes White Dragon that once belonged to Grandpa Mutou and was later passed to Rebecca Hawkins, who in turn later passed it on to Asuka. Basically I’ve got an idea that Asuka and Fubuki have a backstory tied to the Hawkins’. Either family friends or even relatives. In the case of the former, I might want to use Asuka’s and Fubuki’s dub names…

Related to all this, Asuka will likewise NOT be using much if any of the standard Blue Eyes support, and certainly not anything that Kaiba used or is tied to him (see; Eternal Light). Basically, I really want Asuka’s use of Blue Eyes here to be entirely independent of Kaiba’s and not feel like she’s just repurposing what he did.

Additionally, I really want to preserve Asuka’s use of Ritual monsters from the series, as I think that’s always been a really cool and unique aspect to her character. Meaning that while Asuka might have a copy of Blue Eyes White Dragon, her actual Blue Eyes ‘ace’ monster is in fact a Ritual version of Blue Eyes that she summons by sacrificing regular Blue Eyes.

And this makes things a bit interesting because while there are a couple of existing Ritual Blue Eyes White Dragon retrains, they both happen to ‘Chaos’ variants and DARK Attribute, neither of which feels fitting to Asuka, especially if she’s contrasting Fubuki’s use of Red Eyes Black Dragon. Not to mention Blue Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon was specifically used by Kaiba in DSOD, so that’s definitely off the table.

So that leaves us with a rather interesting criteria for some custom card design:

A LIGHT Attribute Ritual retrain of Blue Eyes White Dragon, along with perhaps a custom Ritual Spell for them, along with maybe some additional support.

And one very interesting aspect to this is that Asuka just so happens to already have a focus on LIGHT Ritual Monsters via her Cyber Angels. So I really like the idea of also making Asuka’s Blue Eyes cards work as generic LIGHT Ritual support so they can slot easily into her existing Cyber Angel deck.

Not to mention any say, Heralds or Drytrons Asuka might add later… XD

Heck, maybe Asuka’s Ritual Blue Eyes is somehow adjacent or even part of the broader ‘Cyber’ family of monsters.

Another aspect to this design comes in the potential contrast to Fubuki. Because if you think about it, Fubuki’s truly ‘iconic’ Red Eyes monster isn’t actually the OG Red Eyes Black Dragon, but instead Red Eyes Darkness Dragon. So I’d say it’s only natural for Asuka’s Ritual Blue Eyes to take some design inspiration from Blue Eyes Shining Dragon, as well as other Blue Eyes monsters clearly based on it like Deep Eyes White Dragon and Blue Eyes Abyss Dragon. Namely, the sleeker, metallic, sharper, more angular design. Which incidentally would give them even more of a similarity to the ‘Cyber’ monsters… XD

So, for your consideration:

Blue-Eyes Cyber Flare Dragon

Stat-wise, Cyber Flare follows the trend of both Blue Eyes Shining and Red Eyes Darkness in that she has the original Blue Eyes ATK/DEF of 3000/2500. Her Level is actually a bit of an interesting question, as on the one hand she could continue the trend of both Shining and Darkness and be LV 10, but on the other hand being a ritual monster meant to be summoned by sacrificing OG Blue-Eyes means she kinda has to be LV 8. But, on the OTHER other hand, there’s always ways to circumvent that limitation through a custom Ritual Spell…

Design and aesthetic-wise, Cyber Flare Dragon is basically OG Blue-Eyes outfitted with a whole smorgasbord of cybernetics in the same vein as the Cyber Dragons and various other ‘Cyber’ monsters. In fact, this could be the source of some VERY fun lore:

Alexis’s normal Blue-Eyes White Dragon isn’t exactly the purely OG Blue-Eyes. Rather, while it is still technically the original fourth copy of BEWD, it has actually become a variant showing a Blue-Eyes that has been weakened and scarred by a grievous wound, obviously representing Kaiba tearing the card in half all those years ago. An act which left a permanent wound on the spirit itself. Indeed, maybe Alexis’s Blue-Eyes even has a weakened attack stat of 2500 instead of 3000 in order to represent this.*

Which in turn has Blue-Eyes Cyber Flare Dragon representing this Blue-Eyes becoming a cyborg with the help of the Cyber Angels and the technology of the Cyber Dragons to regain her lost strength and power, and even become something greater.

As my Ritual Spell idea puts it: “Ritual of Cyberization – Blue-Eyes Ascension”. Which can not only be used to summon any LIGHT Ritual monster (thus being able to support Alexis’s Cyber Angels), but also has a nifty additional effect of being able to use Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the hand, field or deck as the ENTIRE tribute cost, regardless of the Ritual monster’s level. Hence how Alexis is able to use just her Level 8 Blue-Eyes White Dragon to summon a Level 10 Blue-Eyes Cyber Flare Dragon.

This also ties into idea I have for this AU; that Alexis here has a much more specific student/mentor relationship with Zane. With her Cyber Girl and Cyber Angel cards likewise having more of a fleshed out connection with Zane’s Cyber Dragons. Alexis here is in many respects Zane’s protégé, and while her use of the Cyber Girls and Cyber Angels represents her decision to walk her own path rather than following in her mentor’s footsteps, Blue-Eyes Cyber Flare Dragon represents how Alexis has nonetheless inherited just a bit of the Cyber Dragon lineage from Zane.

It also doesn’t hurt that this AU is way more explicit about Zane and Atticus having dated. Which in turn has Zane seeing Alexis as something of a younger sister. You know, a younger sibling that he can actually respect and be proud of. And yes, this does make things HILARIOUSLY awkward for Syrus XD

In addition, Alexis in this AU does not get brainwashed by the Society of Light in Season 2, and instead winds up having a big, climactic duel with Cyberdark Zane after the latter has spent a few episodes smacking Atticus and Syrus around.

Basically there’s a lot of fun ideas here and I may be adding more later lol

*Which rather amusingly means that she can still beat Red-Eyes in a straight fight XD
