A came up with the simple descending chords in the left hand and solo line in the right a couple days ago while I was working. So today I booted up Acid and recorded it, then started coming up with other instrument parts and other sections. One of them even became the intro, so it doesn’t even start with the line I came up with a couple days ago.

I originally came up with the line with my keyboard set to sound like a piano, but when I tried the one cheap 80s-esque pad that my keyboard had, it suddenly had some retrowave character to it, so I decided to go full on synthwave/retrowave/synthpop with this one. Back to the 80s again. The main line is a synth that imitates a classic 80s synth, and the counterpoint line is sampled from a DX7. And the percussion is all sampled from 80s drum machines.

These jam sessions are really helping me get better at improvising. And I’m starting to remember just how much of my very early cybergrunge stuff was just that... improvising one thing, then a bassline or counterpoint, then another part, over and over again.

Quick edit to my last jam session. Added some alternate tracks to fade in and out, and a new arpeggiated loop. (And this time I listened to it on multiple sets of speakers to make sure it was balance. Forgot to do that last time. The percussion didn’t sound overwhelming in my headphones, but on the living room entertainment center when I listened to it AFTER I posted it... phew. All you could hear was percussion.)

Another quick screenside jam session. Didn’t really have any ideas when I went in, just started playing with instruments.  Even though I didn’t end up using any traditional cathedral-type instruments, the slow movement just kind of reminded me of some ever-growing organ pieces. Which is why I added the soaring choir-ish sounding instrument towards the end of it. I don’t think I’d try to finish this one to be on an album, but I could see it being used in one of my cyberloops packs. I could see the various lines being traded out with variations, or quieter moments easily for something that would be in the background of a video game.

Just a little something I was playing with. Mostly testing out instruments, then I found a cache of old licensed loops and sound clips that I got when I bought various versions of Acid in the past. I don’t often use sound clips in my work, so I just decided to have fun with it. Nothing really new in this one, just playing around.

I might have gone a little overboard with the sound bytes.

... anyway, I’m probably not going to post much for the next few days. Just taking a little break while dealing with holiday stuff.

No title yet, just trying to get back into the swing of doing my Cyberloops style stuff. Not sure I like the guitar/sitar solo I put in the middle of the first part of the loop. I’ve still go time to keep tweaking it.

Since this one is made for my Cyberloops style, it’s made to go on indefinitely, and it has no ending.

For this one, I decided to make only one main loop, but make it have three sections. The main body is the longest part, and other than some drum samples, it’s almost entirely my own synth work. The intro and the end of the loop are made to blend into each other, so the last four measures of the end of the loop can double as the intro into the next loop. The intro and end are made up of mostly sampled stuff. In fact, I think the only synths of my own that are in the intro and end of the loop are the flute-ish sounds that I made as an optional addon for each time through the loop. I made two versions of the loop, one with very straightforward synths, and the other with a muffled filter added to it, and less strident synths.

This is what I TRIED to post a few days ago. Tuesday, I think? It’s hard to keep track with a queue. I like this cut, but I still felt like it needed more, which is why I added more voice samples and an extra little bridge in the middle. I’m actually surprised at how clear it sounds. As I was editing it, it seemed like everything I did made it sound more and more muddy. I was working on it for a couple of days before I got it right. It wasn’t until right before I (unsuccessfully) uploaded it that I got it to sound like this instead of like a handful of clashing tracks that were all fighting with each other.
