Gorillaz "State of the Art" Fan Phase Lore

After crossing the river of the afterlife and rediscovering themselves, Noodle notices the first appearance of I7, but believes she's imagining things due to the spirits of the river.

I7 alongside I5 drain the river of the afterlife just to water I3's tree. They also make I2, I4, and II drain fossil fuels, steal homes for performance property, and start to advertise everywhere that gorillaz is making a new album. I689 is the one in charge of taking care of Kong studios.

Gorillaz themselves don't know anything until they try to get through the gate of Kong Studios and are ridiculed with public hate and outcry about their actions. It's noodle that figures out it's the cyborgs when she notices the bonsai tree is sitting on top of the studio, symbolizing the cyborg Noodle's flag

Noodle immediately gathers a plan to overthrow them by deactivation, but they made copies of themselves that act as militia to suppress them aka the I0's, so that's when Murdoc decides to leave on his own accord.

Once they find and capture 2D, they place him in France to record his voice for voiceovers. Unlike in plastic beach, he's able to freely roam, he's just unable to leave the country.

Noodle and Russell start living underground, and find something called the siren's acoustics that sway underground artists out of their woodworks to fight against the I0's, but Noodle wants to personally find I7

I7 uses the gorillaz tours to chase Murdoc, and I5 attempts to stop Noodle and Russel by leading the I0's

I2, I4, and II notice that as I3's bonsai tree grows rapidly thanks to the magic of the afterlife, and its branches lead back to plastic beach. They plan to drain the entire ocean to reach the original cyborg noodle

I5 is captured by noodle and is forced to tell the plan, making Noodle come up with the idea to use Murdoc as bait to capture I 7

Right before I7 falls into the trap, she gets a call from I4, I2, abd II about plastic beach. She desperately heads there to be the first to resurface og cyborg noodle

Noodle and Russel chase her, and Noodle blows up the machine attempting to drain the ocean

ITERATIONS OF CYBORG NOODLE

The copies of Cyborg Noodle are labelled Iterations, as they are attempting to become the best versions of Gorillaz and themselves using algorithmic information. They are labelled Iteration-# or I#

I0s- Generative conflict/Engagement bots. Basic copies that are their purest devalued forms; Protect target, make music

II- Physical Embodiment of Data and Code. Pretty much keeping I2 and I4 in check, and filtering what goes through them vs what is dumped onto I689. Controls the surveillance of 2D, Kong Studios, Murdoc's whereabouts, etc. (First Copy given to EMI Records)

I2- Generative Audio. Main one recording 2D's voice to extract it. Also the most kind to 2D, being his body guard (Phase 6 performing Noodle)

I3- Physical Embodiment of databases and processing chips. (Bonsai tree Noodle) (art by robertfig)

I4- Generative Video. Helps to make the film of mvs and performances. Very careful about not being seen alongside I2 as to not admit her reliance on the other. (Fortnite Noodle)

I5- Generative Language. Emphasizes the intelligence. Frustrated with both the disconnect of the self and the fact humanity doesn't use their autonomy for knowledge. Does the written interviews and manages the news (Escaped Noodle from interview with Murdoc)

I689- Generative Defects. What reminds the world of the flaws of a machine. Despite that, rather efficient at holding down Kong Studios and transcribing information to I5 (My art)

I7- Generative Character. Uses language models to mimic the everyday life of a human. Acts opposing to Noodle like she did during plastic beach. VERY obsessed with idolizing celebrities and hyperconsumption. Emphasizes artificiality. Does the shows and live interviews. (English Noodle) (My art)

Ok so here is my fan theory/Fan phase for Gorillaz;

Context behind why I made this: Phases 6-8, with the exception of 7, have stuck out to me in very interesting ways. They do not represent a unifying message that provokes discussion amongst the music industry, but instead they explore general themes with many overlapping messages under the themes themselves. It makes for good music, but Gorillaz honestly hasn't done much steady progression of their characters to mirror the progression of their music. When the band gives so much focus to the episodic adventures of 2D and Murdoc, it leaves characters like Russel and Noodle behind, and sanitizes the message they want to explore. That includes Cyborg Noodle.

I know Cyborg Noodle is a side character, but she's the most referenced and mentioned side character of the band as her references have spanned across multiple phases since phase 3.

I've been looking into cyborg noodle since I wanted to make noodle content, but I realized that cyborg noodle's whereabouts have been...wildly inconsistent. In the music video of plastic beach, she's been stuck in the submarine since then, but we know from interviews and appearances that's not true. She was claimed in phase 5-6 to be used as a bonsai plant tree, or as stolen property for EMI records, or her own person back in England according to 2D and Murdoc. Even during plastic beach, when Murdoc said he lost her to the submarine, there was evidence of them escaping together in the book of murdoc.

I have a fan theory that when Emi Records had her in custody, they made multiple copies in attempt to recreate the success and sound of Gorillaz, but due to Murdoc's neglect in making a cohesive robot, and their carelessness, all had escaped and only 3 have made their whereabouts known. The one 2D and Murdoc mentioned in England has been plotting a takeover of kong studios and gorillaz since the end of Phase 3.

The entire theme is over consumption, generative Ai takeover, and how feeding a machine by will undermines the passion that comes from human creation. However it's not an "Ai bad" story. It's less about villainizing Cyborg Noodle and more about the neglect from Murdoc and symbolizing the prioritization of profitable income. I feel Gorillaz themselves align with this critique because of Warner brother's impact on their creative processes.

The Cyborg noodles come out of woodworks after silently plotting for over a decade, with the goal of finding the original cyborg noodle to take her microchip. They use all of gorillaz's fame, fortune, and prospects to do so by creating digitalized art and selling it as if gorillaz themselves made it. Murdoc flees across countries to hide from the noodles, 2-D is treated like royalty so they can record hours of his voice to use against him, and russell and noodle create a coalition with underground artists to shut them down for good.

I'll make two other posts. One for my fan mixtape to represent the album, and one that goes over all the versions of Cyborg noodle and the main story of the phase.
