HOW TO TRAIN IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS BEFORE AN EVENT

Hey there everyone! I hope you are well today and looking forward to the weekend! So we have a little over 4 weeks until we head back out to France to do another Bordeaux to Barcelona, so what am i doing in the last 4 weeks? Training The last 4 weeks is really important part of the training block. If you are training less than 15hrs a week, you really don’t need a long taper. The taper can be 1.5-1 week because we actually need as many miles in the legs as possible to handle the distances and terrain that we will come up against. So over the next 4 weeks you want three weeks where you have your largest build of distance, hours or stress (whatever your using to measure your progress) with a one week taper. Mistakes At this point in your training you should have had a consistent block of training where you have been building each week so the increase in the training over the next 4 weeks shouldn’t be too much of a shock to the system. What you don’t want to do is have done no training and then panic in these last 4 weeks and try and cram in as much as possible. This will just tire the body out and could lead to injury or illness. Nutrition If you are losing weight to be light for the event, then make sure you maintain your CALORIE DEFICIT as this is what drops weight. Make sure you are getting an even portion of macro nutrients (Protein, Carbohydrate, Fat) and don’t drop any of them out of your diet unless you have an allergy as they all contain important nutrients to help your body grow & repair. Make sure you are getting plenty of water on board and that you are cycling the fluid. If you are doing large distances at this point then you need to be taking on lots of water, but on rest days, water might build up and increase your weight so make sure that you keep turning the legs on a rest day or use something like a sauna to sweat it out (thats a pro tip!) Sleep Manage your sleep well as this is when the recovery process has its greatest effect. If you are doing long miles and building up a good amount of distance each day then you should have a good nights sleep. Try to get to bed around 9pm for a full cycle. TOP TIPS TO STAY CYCLE FIT DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Hey everyone, We are now in full swing of the Summer holidays and you are no doubt half way out the door with your swimmers, flip flops and Hawaiian shirt! This is a period of time where all that good training that you’ve done over the year can slide a little. However, This isn’t a bad thing. The holiday period is a good time to reset, unwind and relax. Use this time to have some fun and don’t worry about the training, just make sure that you don’t leave it too long before getting back on the bike. So here are my top tips to stay cycle fit during the holiday season! 1. Have a group of friends or a club that go out regularly. Make sure it is pencilled into the diary so that you stay accountable. 2. You can do shorter but more intense sessions so the volume can be dropped. You then don’t have to do as much to maintain your level of fitness. 3. If you aren’t training as much, don’t eat as many carbohydrates or overindulge on the naughty things. This will help to maintain the waistline. 4. Do some cross training. Add some variation into the training. Play tennis, go swimming, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding. Add something else into the exercise plan to stay fresh psychologically. 5. Add some light gym work into the plan. See professional advice before doing this but gym work can be a fun way to add strength into your body before going back into winter training. The most important thing is to have fun! Enjoy the time off with the family or friends and make the most of it. Don’t worry about having time off as rest can be as much a part of training as the training itself. Have a great day! WE DON’T NEED TO BE PROFESSIONAL TO BE AWESOME

Hello everyone, It is Thursday morning and I hope you are having a fantastic week so far. I am definitely perkier this week because of the exercise I have been consistently getting. I’m not feeling as tired. It feels great. I am very much like many of my clients. I am have never had a professional riding background but I love the sport and made the decision to help people that have suffered just like myself. I struggled finding the motivation to train but also the expertise. The only coaching I could find was online or using spreadsheets. I didn’t want either of those. I wanted someone to talk to on a regular basis, to turn up somewhere and have everything sorted for me. I may not have been a professional, but I certainly acted like one!!! I’ve struggled with food, I’ve struggled with consistency, I’ve struggled with confidence. However, I’ve done some amazing things on the bike. I’ve covered the length the of the UK I’ve seen much of Europe I’ve Raced I’ve done Charity Events I’ve ridden 310 miles in under 24hrs These aren’t at professional paces or televised, but to me they are awesome achievements and I wouldn’t change them for the world. Coaching isn’t always about yelling and screaming at someone to do something, but to be an ear to listen to, a friend to call on, someone to love the outdoors with. If you want the same things as me.
