Copenhagen Bicycle Superhighways projected on Toronto by Mikael Coalville-Andersen

Over the last several months, I’ve been helping to grow the conversation about the potential for cycle highways within Metro Vancouver, as part of HUB Cycling’s UnGaptheMap campaign. In an effort to make utilitarian and recreational cycling more enticing, countries like Denmark are decades ahead of cities across North America. The map above transposes the Capital Region of Denmark’s (essentially Metro Copenhagen) cycle superhighway network overtop of Canada’s largest city (red routes are built while black are proposed). Efforts to increase suburban cycling in the GTA are already taking place in areas like Scarborough but the investment and implementation of safe and direct cycling infrastructure in these areas (especially longer-distance cycle highway routes to nearby urban centres) continues to be politically and financially-challenging.
